Description:

Kumula is designed to become a complete software suite for business needs. Started as software for consultants, it is flexible enough to be used by almost any class of business. It provides a small CRM ("Clients") and some other applications. Everybody is invited to use it or enhance it.

Installation:
Look at the INSTALL file in the package or visit www.kumula.org for a detailed installation description.

Changelog:

This is the last stable release before I'll port it to Qt4 (as "Kumula2"), so I feel free to call it "1.0". :-)

The whole suite is becoming bigger and bigger, so now it's time to split it. This is the base package with the central Kumula library and the most important applications. The package contains the following programs:

- BizCalc:
The modular designed calculator tool, coming with a spartanic RPN calculator and an unit conversion module

- Clients:
The client/customer management application, with many improvements (like individual client attributes) and the modules "Info" (logo+description), "Contacts" (for managing contact persones, addresses and communication data) and "Tickets" (for letting the users talk about a client like on a web forum)

- Configurator:
The central configuration utility, to setup the database access and the user interface (menus, icons, ...) of all Kumula applications.

- Users:
A small tool for managing the people using Kumula.

Further application will be provided in separate packages for easier maintenance and faster bugfixes and updates.

This is a very interesting application. It has a lot of potential and could become another "killer app" for Linux on a business desktop... I'm planning to watch this space very closely... Keep going!

 Error :(

I've made all the installation moves and when I run clients binary, I get an error message: Couldn't read configuration file /home/jinjiru/.kumularc for database access - though I have database access and configuration file for kumula is properly edited :(

What should I do?

Hmmm... if the access to the config file fails (/home/user/.kumularc), it could be a problem with the file's name or it's attributes. I'm sure this error message has nothing to do with the database access itself, only with the file access.

But maybe it's better for you to wait for the next release. The database / config file access hasn't changed, but there are many features which are worth the installation work. ;-)

 pricelist database

perhaps too soon, but i would love to see pricelist database assoisted with each client. perhaps if the client is a dealer, or just a VIP or whatever, he could get a user-chosen x% discount which will be automaticly calculated.

also easing share of information between serval salsemen would be such an advantage!

I am seriously considering using this at my work, as we have a very large database of machinery parts for metal work, and many clients and serval salesmen, it would be such a life-saver if it could allow me to easily maintain and handle each client personally with all the memos and everything.

Great work! I can really see a bright future for this one!

Alex.

You're right, it's a little bit too soon to talk about a pricelist database. ;-) First there has to be an application that handles with services or products. Such an app could integrate client-specific discounts easily.

Different salesman can share informations about clients already. With this release (2004.06), there is a new plugin for the client management program - "Tickets". You can post messages and replies like on a web forum.

Thank you very much for praising. :-) Please continue giving ideas and opinions.

I read on the website that you're using your own libs to handle the database, are you using sqlite? if this is the case maybe i could write (when I have time :) a php web interface for unfortunate users that can't use KDE.

another question, are you planing to build an app à la Compiere for KDE with kumula (i'm well aware that would be tough and take a long time to do)? that would be great :)

congrats for the great app already!

We don't use our "own" lib for database access. We use only the Qt database libs so Kumula can use every database supported by Qt. If you want to use SQLite, you just have to change the db type in your ".kumularc" file to "QSQLITE".
We just enhanced the QSqlDatabase class to provide central functions for selects, inserts etc.

A web interface would be great - if you want to do something, please email to us, so we can talk about a concept before.

Compiere is not what Kumula wants to be. It is an integrated ERP system. For example, you can do accounting for your company with it, but with Kumula you will be able to do accounting for your clients.

Sorry, we don't have any experience with ACT. Maybe you can give us a list of wanted features. That would be nice. :-) And maybe we will implement some for the next (or next but one) release.

Definitly yes! We're sure we have to let Kumula communicate with different PIM software (Kontact/Kolab as well as Outlook/Exchange). But there is a long way to go ...
