Description:

Plastikfox is a theme for Mozilla Firefox to make it have the same look as the KDE programs with the Plastik style and the Crystal SVG 1.0 icon set.

ABOUT THE OK AND CANCEL BUTTONS: Firefox 1.5 doesn't have OK and Cancel buttons anymore in the Options dialog but it's possible to enable them again. Just write "about:config" in the address bar, search for the key "browser.preferences.instantApply" and set it to false. The OK and Cancel buttons should be there back again.

BUTTON ORDER: You can reverse the button order in the dialog boxes so they are like in the other KDE applications. Simply click "Reverse button order" to install a patch to activate this feature.

COLOR SCHEME: Plastikfox doesn't follow the KDE color scheme. Remember it's just a theme for Firefox, so it's impossible to do it. It's made with the 'Plastik' color scheme. If you want to change the color scheme you'll have to modify the theme manually. :(

Thanks to Everaldo for his Crystal SVG icon sets. You can get them at:
http://www.everaldo.com

-------------------------------------
HOW TO INSTALL
-------------------------------------

If you have an older version of the theme, uninstall it before installing a new one.

· Extract the files anywhere you want
· Open the install.html file in Firefox (you don't need to be 'root')
· Click the "Install" button
· Accept when it prompts for the theme installation
· 'Tools' menu - Themes
· Select 'Plastikfox Crystal SVG' and click 'Use this theme'
· Restart Firefox (VERY IMPORTANT!)
· Enjoy!

If you want, you may delete the downloaded files once the theme is installed.

-------------------------------------
POLL
-------------------------------------

Your opinion counts! I would like to know if you prefer keeping the current icon set or changing the icons to the ones included in KDE 3.5. Please vote here:

 html buttons

Great theme, Do you know if it's possible to theme the html form buttons and textboxes in firefox? because the browser looks nice in plastik, but the webform buttons still look very ugly.

Right now it's not possible, but I'm investigating the way to change the look of the widgets inside a web page. I've been able to change some widgets like the text boxes, the radios and the buttons. I have problems with the checkboxes, which I've changed partially (they look OK when they aren't checked, but when you check them there are problems). I'm also having problems with the combo boxes. Anyway it's a matter of time. In one of the next releases I'll try to incorporate this feature. Stay tuned. ;)

If you're curious, you can take a look at this screenshot. It's Mozilla, but it can also be applied to Firefox (remember they have the same rendering engine):

If the server doesn't answer it might be offline, so try again later.

 Icons

This is really cool, but the icons look too large for me. Is it possible to make them smaller? Better yet, is it possible to use the default firefox 0.9 icons instead?

Nice work.

Thanks

The answer to the first question is YES. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize. You'll see a checkbox that says "Use small icons". Active it and voièla!

About the icons, actually it's not possible to use the original Firefox icons. You need to modify the theme if you want to have different icons. If you have time to spend on it, you might uncompress the jar file of the theme (it's in ZIP format) and replace every icon you find with its equivalent in the original theme. To get the icons in the Firefox theme search for a file called "classic.jar" inside the "chrome" directory of your Firefox installation and uncompress it. When you're done you just need to replace the old theme with the one you've modified.

I have already posted this on here, but I am using this theme + windows and the checkbox checked image does not show up. On my linux box it shows, but not in windows. Any ideas?

Any idea why my previous post about this was deleted?

OK, so it's working now for some reason. Not sure why, but I'm happy :)

 Bottom-left buttons

Hey there dude, really like the theme. Best FireFox theme by far!

I'm having a problem though--for some reason the icons in the bottom left of the screen aren't displaying. The area of the screen still comes up with "Signed by xyz" or "Change popup blocking settings for this website" but no icon ever appears.

I'm using the latest version of both firefox and PlastikFox and it's very weird.

The area of the page in question looks like this, noticably (in this example) missing the "secure padlock" icon.

Cheers and keep up the good work.

Does it also happen with Plastikfox 1.1? If it doesn't happen, I think I know what's the problem and I'll fix it in the next update. If it also happens, then I'll have to do further investigation. That's why it would be very useful to me to know wheter it happens in 1.1 or not.

You may download Plastikfox 1.1 from:

Ok, then I think I know what's the problem. I'll fix it in Plastikfox 1.2.1 soon. I finish my university exams the next week so probably I'll wait till then before working on the update. Stay tuned.

Hi djworld! Just wanted to add that the "choose alternative stylesheet" button in the bottom left corner seems to be borked as well. Thanks for this beautiful theme!

Try again with Plastikfox 1.2.1. This issue has been fixed.

I encourage everybody to update to this version if they were using previous versions because now everything should work very well and without noticeable bugs. Now the next step will be to make Plastikfox compatible with the Tabbrowser extensions and I'm probably going to investigate how to make Firefox use the standard KDE open/save dialogs.

 Error in nightlies

by imperator on: Jul 14 2004

Score 50%

I just downloaded one of the new Firefox nightlies (Aviary branch, 20040713), and when I try to use Plastikfox 1.2.1 I get an error when launching Firefox: "Error launching browser window:no XBL binding for browser". Since this is a problem in the nightlies, it probably will be a problem in Firefox 1.0 (or the next milestone). A fix before then would be much appreciated.

Oh, and this is with a fresh profile, and Firefox was installed into an empty directory.

Thanks,
Ben

I don't recommend you using nightly builds. They can explode in your hands. Remember they are development snapshots. The "no binding for browser" might be something that has not been implemented yet or a bug recently introduced. That message also appeared sometimes in Firefox 0.8 and had nothing to do with Plastikfox. I can't get Plastikfox to work with nightlies because there are constant changes in Firefox while it's being developed and I can't be guessing what has changed between one nightly and another. That would be too much work and no real benefits.

Awesome theme! But how do you install it globally (i.e. for all users) as a root?
