Description:

Plastikfox is a theme for Mozilla Firefox to make it have the same look as the KDE programs with the Plastik style and the Crystal SVG 1.0 icon set.

ABOUT THE OK AND CANCEL BUTTONS: Firefox 1.5 doesn't have OK and Cancel buttons anymore in the Options dialog but it's possible to enable them again. Just write "about:config" in the address bar, search for the key "browser.preferences.instantApply" and set it to false. The OK and Cancel buttons should be there back again.

BUTTON ORDER: You can reverse the button order in the dialog boxes so they are like in the other KDE applications. Simply click "Reverse button order" to install a patch to activate this feature.

COLOR SCHEME: Plastikfox doesn't follow the KDE color scheme. Remember it's just a theme for Firefox, so it's impossible to do it. It's made with the 'Plastik' color scheme. If you want to change the color scheme you'll have to modify the theme manually. :(

Thanks to Everaldo for his Crystal SVG icon sets. You can get them at:
http://www.everaldo.com

-------------------------------------
HOW TO INSTALL
-------------------------------------

If you have an older version of the theme, uninstall it before installing a new one.

· Extract the files anywhere you want
· Open the install.html file in Firefox (you don't need to be 'root')
· Click the "Install" button
· Accept when it prompts for the theme installation
· 'Tools' menu - Themes
· Select 'Plastikfox Crystal SVG' and click 'Use this theme'
· Restart Firefox (VERY IMPORTANT!)
· Enjoy!

If you want, you may delete the downloaded files once the theme is installed.

-------------------------------------
POLL
-------------------------------------

Your opinion counts! I would like to know if you prefer keeping the current icon set or changing the icons to the ones included in KDE 3.5. Please vote here:

 Icon size

How do I make the icons smaller? (Back, Forward, ...)
My icons have twice the size as yours at the screenshot.

BTW: Thank you very much for this theme.

Well, I know it's late for the answer but I haven't saw your message before. You just have to right-click the toolbar and choose "Customize". In the popup active the "Small icons" checkbox and you're done.

 inner tab border?

by ryampolsky on: Jan 7 2005

Score 50%

Do you need to draw the rounded inner border around the web page area in the main window?

I imagine that this is supposed to be the 'body' of the tabs (when the tab bar is visible), but it tends to just look overly busy, since the 'tabs' in question extend side-to-side and top-to-bottom.

Might look better if the tab bar just extended all the way left-to-right with no rounded left and right corners and didn't attempt to frame the main window at all.

What do you think?

Perhaps that could be included as an option, but my main objective is to be as close as possible to Konqueror and KDE. The Konqueror tab bar has exactly that effect and that's just why I made it.

I figured you must have had a good reason.

Still, if someone's using Firefox (even under KDE), then they're probably not using Konqueror, so I wouldn't go out of my way to make it look 'exactly' the same as Konqueror. Presumably Konqueror (like any tabbed browser) is using tabs in a pretty unique way. Most apps with tabs would have a margin between the tab 'folder' and the window border, no?

Besides, this is a pretty subtle thing. Not likely to jar the eyes of a Konqueror user for Firefox to look (almost indetectably) better. Then again, if it's so subtle, why can't I get used to it...

 Reverse offset?

 by kde-memtek on: Jan 23 2005

Can you reverse the bookmark offset in Firefox if the subfolder pops up to the left, instead of to the right, of the parent folder? Currently there is a small gap which occurs if the subfolder pops up to the left of the parent folder.

 Strange Scrolling

by morhekil on: May 15 2005

Score 50%

It seems that Plastik has some impact on Firefox page scrolling speed. When browsing some pages with heavy graphics (or just heavy graphical backgrounds - I'm not quite sure yet) fast scrolling with mouse wheel results in teared movement instead of smooth one - it jumps for ten lines then slows and crawls line by line then jumps again for five lines, etc.
For example you can see it on this page:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/alinchen/
It is in russian but it doesn't matter - I've seen the same effect on some english pages. I've used previous version of Plastik on Firefox 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 and current version on 1.0.4 - every combination has described effect.
Other themes doesn't have this problem - default one works perfectly, also I've tried Qute 3 - no problems, so it's certainly related to this theme.
Any way to solve it? It's quite annoying.

Do you mean it happens in this new version of the theme or it also happened in previous versions? I suppose it also happened in previous versions. Although it doesn't seem to, Plastikfox is a very complex theme with lots of bindings and tricks to make Firefox look just like Plastik. Sometimes things are not implemented in the most clean way, but because there is not a clean way to do it. It's not easy to make Firefox look like Plastik, and those bindings and tricks result in less performance. So that problem is not strange, but I can't solve it. At least Plastikfox is better than nothing. If you want a very fast browser with the KDE look, then use a KDE browser like Konqueror. Firefox is a program with his own toolkit on top of GTK (and I think the code is not very clean, by the way), so it's not easy to make it look like KDE without having an impact on the speed.

I've been using Tomcat's Crystal theme version for ages. Did you get it from him?

This theme has also been there for ages. ;-) The first version was released on March 19th, 2004, as you can see. And it was based on Plastikzilla and Keramikzilla, released even earlier. So no, this isn't a rip off. I made it from scratch without any help (if we don't count bug reports). The icons are the same, yes, but they're just the standard KDE icons so it doesn't mean anything. And Plastikfox is much more complex than Mostly Crystal.

I haven't made any theme to match the Active Heart style and I don't have plans to do one. It would require a lot of effort to make it and I think I would make a theme matching ThinKeramik first. Sorry. If any volunteers would like to start making a theme based on Plastikfox to match the look of Active Heart or any other KDE theme I will be encouraged to assist him.

Also, creating versions of Plastikfox with other icon themes is easier and in fact there's someone who's going to make a version with the Lila icons. If someone wants to take another icon set, send me an e-mail and I'll instruct him how to do it.
