Description:

A friendly nzb usenet binary downloader.

Kwooty handles automatic file repairing archive extraction, multi-server support, smart par2 download, shutdown scheduler, etc...

How to build the project :
1. untar the archive
> tar xvfz kwooty-1.1.0.tar.gz

2. build and install:
> cd kwooty
> cd build
> cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ..
> sudo make install OR > su -c 'make install'

Really nice app! It beats lottan/hellan by far!

I have two suggestions though. In the shutdown settings, a setting to not shotdown, at all. And the option to minimize to the systemtray.

Hi bofhenator,

I plan to add "minimize to the systemtray" feature in a near future release as it seems to useful for several users ! :)

About shutdown behavior, a setting to not shutdown at all should normally be useless as if you click on shutdown button in toolbar, shutdown will be scheduled and if you click again shutdown will be disabled (icon notifying will be removed from status bar as well).

Just tell me if this behavior does not fit your needs.

I love Kwooty. It's an KDE killer application, a very excellent replacement for klibido, which I've been using a for long time.

Kwooty is the best nzb grabber at the moment. And the best thing on it is: it's an KDE 4 application, not GTK/Gnome. That rocks.

I hope, you will continue in developing it.

I've some suggestions for you:

1)
Minimize to systemtray with an icon that shows the total download status in percent (similar to kmail's system tray icon which shows the number of new incoming mails). When hoovering with the mouse over the icon, a tooltip could show more detailed informations about the download status.

2)
Use of kwallet to store login/password instead of using kwooty config files.

3)
Sometimes the extracting/verify processes makes my system a little bit slow. Maybe it could help to start the extraction/verify process with a different nice value. There could be an option in the kwooty settings, where you can specify a nice value for extraction/verify. Each time an extraction process gets started, it will be executed with that nice value.

4)
More plasma integration, maybe a plasmoid that shows the current download status and that can control kwooty, like pause/continue download.

5) Make use of the general KDE system notification system, e.g. when a download in the download list is finished and completely extracted, then the KDE notification system could inform the user.

There should be two more buttons in the toolbar, to move one job one position up/down in the job list.
Maybe moving the jobs with the mouse would be nice to.

First of all thanks for your enthusiasm, that's cool ! :)

Development of kwooty is going on and next release should be ready in one or two weeks from now (if everything works fine ;) ).

Then thanks a lot for your relevant suggestions.

Features are frozen for 0.4 release but I will try to integrate most of them in future releases.

I will also keep an eye on Kmail systray icon as I really like this feature.

A few things I would really like to see included in kwooty:

1) System tray support, like everyone else has asked for. In the meantime, I'm using kdocker to put it there anyways.

2) Bandwidth scheduling along the same lines as the KTorrent plugin.

3) Support for custom RSS feeds. Some NZB services allow you to automatically create RSS feeds for certain searches so your NZB clients can automatically download things added to it.

Great work on it so far, keep it up. :)

I just installed kwooty and I love it. However, there is a small problem. There is no folder watch plugin. I am running kubuntu 10.04. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Maybe you built kwooty from sources. If this is the case you may need to run kbuildsycoca4 (or maybe kbuildsycoca according to your distro) in order to update the system configuration cache.

Then try to launch kwooty again.

I Hope this will solve your issue, just tell me if problem persists.

No, sorry. i installed it with apt-get after adding ferramroberto/linuxfreedomlucid to my sources.list. Do i need to build from source? I checked to see what was installed and everything seems to be there. Perhaps a cfg file needs tweeking? I don't need folder watch. That's just frosting. :)

I followed-up my investigations and it seems that plugin list is empty if you used the kwooty ubuntu package from linuxfreedom'PPA.

I checked the installed files and it seems the issue comes from the file located under :
/usr/share/kde4/servicetypes/kwootyplugin.desktop

As I do not build ubuntu packages by myself there is nothing I can do to correct for now this issue but the following should work:

1. open the kwootyplugin.desktop file:
sudo kate /usr/share/kde4/servicetypes/kwootyplugin.desktop

2. Replace the following:

[PropertyDef::X-Kwooty-Plugin-Version]
Type=IntX-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=desktop_kwooty

By

[PropertyDef::X-Kwooty-Plugin-Version]
Type=Int
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=desktop_kwooty

3. save file and run kbuildsycoca4 from konsole

4. relaunch kwooty, plugin list should not be empty anymore.

I tried your suggestion and it did not solve my problem but it did lead me to a solution.

I downloaded the tar file and looked at kwootyplugin.desktop. It was different from my original and your suggestion. I changed to it and it solved the missing plugin problem.

I changed

[PropertyDef::X-Kwooty-Plugin-Version]
Type=IntX-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=desktop_kwooty

to

[PropertyDef::X-Kwooty-Plugin-Version]
Type=int

then ran kbuildsycoca4 from konsole.

When i started Kwooty the plugin was there.

Kwooty missing plugin

I just installed kwooty and I love it. However, there is a small problem. There is no folder watch plugin. I am running kubuntu 10.04. Any suggestions?
