Description:

Phase is a widget style for Qt 4 and KDE 4. It is designed to be functional but not drab, and aesthetic but not distracting.

Artistic design draws upon the genius of earlier masters. This is particularly true for minimalistic designs. Therefore I cannot in good conscience claim this look to be truly original. But I have done my best. I hope you like it!

Phase is now being maintained in kdeartwork. These are only "snapshot" releases. This is a "pure" Qt style, in that it does not require KDE.

- Fixed drawing of list headers and some buttons (98894, 99174)

This is a very nice looking start. I really admire simplistic yet professional looking styles (like Plastik). Phase is definitely looking pretty good so far.

Some comments:

- In menus, have a slightly different background for the icon (like .Net or ThinKeramik or Active Heart styles). They do not necessarily make the style "non-simple" and improve usability.
- Some of the corners could be rounded more - in tabs for example.

One more comment:

- The checkbox, radio buttons should probably have a little tick mark indicating it is indeed selected. Just colors is bad because of two reasons:

1. Looking at a checkbox does not immediately say if it is selected or not. User will have to click on it and see the color change to recognize that the color means it is selected.
2. for people with color blindeness, it is not easy.

I didn't want any circles or round bits in the style. One earlier design decision was to make everything "square". Monitor screens and pixels are square, and rather than fighting the medium I worked with it. Like all design decisions, this is sure to disappoint as many people as it pleases :-)

After finally getting to install this and try it out, I think the issue with the colored background in the radio button/checkboxes as being selected is mostly a non-issue. Running your mouse over the options makes it pretty clear which are check/not checked, since non-checked boxes only display a small box outline, while a checked-box's square shrinks.

I might be wrong (not being color blind myself) but unless they choose a color scheme that hid the contrast from their eyes, I don't think they would have much trouble.

On a side-note, I just realized how bad default desktop colors could be for blue/yellow colorblind guys. Maybe that is why MS-Windows always chooses ugly default colors?!? ;)

This is a nice style. Personally, I do like the simple, but attractive, styles the best.

I have to agree with the above posts, however, regarding the radio's and checkboxes. I suggest using a simple dot in the middle of each, and I would suggest making the radios round. I know that's kind of like every other style, but there is a good reason for that -- people will recognize it as a radio option, and not a slanted checkbox.

I disagree with more rounded tabs, tho. I think they look fine the way they are.

Still, those combo's and scrollbards look great. I can't wait to get home to try it out interactively. :)

There are two reasons I chose diamond radio buttons instead of circles. First, they are more traditional in UNIX (Motif, Athena, GTK), and this is a style for UNIX. The popularity of Windows was not an influence on me. Second, it's much easier to draw a good diamond than a good circle. Aliasing problems are very hard to avoid with circles, especially if you have to mask them.

Of course, that doesn't mean that I consider my radio buttons to be perfect! This style is a long way from being complete.

I like the diamond shape rather than the circle.

What I was commenting on was that the selected button is shown to be selected by filling it with color. Maybe there should be some other indication than just color. Like a smaller filled diamond inside the outer diamond. Or, a little tick mark on the diamond.

Ahh, yeah, you do have a point about radio button tradition.

I wasn't trying to infer that it should be more like Windows, only that quite a few users now associate (for good or ill) round with radio and square with checkbox.

Either way, I still really like this style. I'm sure, with your other styles, it'll only improve and be a fave of many users.

menu spacing

I really like this style and I was wondering ...

There is a long-standing complaint of kde style saying that the menu entry spacing is too close. I'm not sure if your style can override that but one should conscious of this for usabilty reasons.

I was thinking that the colored-inside-diamond's border of the radiobox/checkbox could be of an even more contrasting color which would stand out for colorblind and noncolorblind people alike

I just ran over and looked at a friends Windows system, and I couldn't see any readily apparent difference in menu spacing. This is something I could override, but I don't want to if there is not a problem. Maybe the people complaining are using too small of a menu font size?

If you could send me some comparison screenshots (offline) of this problem, I would appreciate it.

I believe he means the spacing of items in the menubar. See PM_MenuBarItemSpacing in the QStyle docs. Its only available in Qt 3.3, though.

the style is nearly perfect (i use it with groover windec:)). i really love the squared feel :)

just the active windows button on taskbar have no gradient, i think it must have a reversed gradient like in active button. may be some gradient in pressed button to but not necessary ;-)
