Description:

Windows 7 basic theme lookalike v.2 :)

Hi there,

so here's the sequel of my 1st attempt to achieve a lookalike to the (so hated) Win.7 appearance.

My 1st try was posted in the early days of June :

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Windows+7+basic+theme+lookalike?content=106601&PHPSESSID=9576fd3e02ec62d4f8d951310eabc9da

I tried then to give the panel the transparency there is in the sosoft OS :)
I guess I find a way to do the trick.

So :

- 1 ) firstly, install the gtk theme I have managed to asemble, a few changes have I done :
they'll be more obvious at the end of the "to do" affair, cause without transparency it just looks blahhh.

- 2 ) when you're done with the gtk theme install,
use the panel.bg.png I provided inside the gtk files as a picture for the panel :
Just right click on the panel, then properties, backgroud, background picture,
and select the picture I provided in the main folder of my theme.
The path should probably be : ~/.themes/Win7.Basic.02/gtk-2.0/panel.bg.png.

If I didn't screw the whole thing, you'll be able to see a true transparent panel bar with soft cloudy mouseover effect and a shady dark button for the foreground open window.

I invite you to read my previous post to get the information about the who's who about this work.

Again, I simply put together things I found here and there but 4 sure didn't do the whole thing on my own, I simply don't have the skills.

Thanx, and enjoy.

P.S.
For all you win$ haters, please pass your way and don't polute this thread with your bad manners. The philosophy is about sharing, not hating.
And 15000 + downloaders of my previous version can't be wrong, nop ?

PS.2 : The icon theme is now available here : http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Win.7.basic.icon.theme.trial.01?content=109359
Enjoy

Changelog:

Change the color of the toolbar and its buttons
Change the color of panel buttons
Managed to give the panel bar real transparency

License:
For personal use :)
Not to be used for commercial purpose if it's more comprehensive this way.
Anyway, use it the way you want to, just as long you don't forget pieces are probably the result of other people's work :)

Used this skin with Ubuntu 9.04 x64. The taskbar is unreadable. The text is white in a white background.

Taskbar here is the standard Gnome panel in the bottom.Your screenshot show another kind of taskbar that is why you don't have this problem.

Can you please fix?

Thanks in advance.

Have you read the instructions regarding the how to get transparent panel bar?

- 1 ) firstly, install the gtk theme I have managed to asemble, a few changes have I done :

Also if you want to change the colour of the panel font there is a program to edit the settings:

sudo apt-get install gnome-color-chooser

Then look in System→Prefs→GNOME Color Chooser on the panel tab, tick normal and pick a colour then apply.

 Two problems

 by Claudisimo on: Aug 7 2009

Score 50%

I have two questions (or problems, I don't know). When I install the theme in gnome everithing works, except the border windows. If I go to system->preferences->appeareance the to customize->window border the option of this theme is not there.

AFTER that, I changed my window manager from metacity to xfwm4, the theme looks ok, except for the borders, just like with metacity. The borders are a different theme?? How do I get them??

The other problem I have is that the menu bar (just where places, application and system are) looks blue, and the rest of the panel transparent.

I use Emerald as window theme manager. And compiz has to be used to get the proper effects ok, as transparency for instance.
That's that simple.
See my previous version, v.1.01, (link in the commnents) to get the point about what you're experiencing.
Thanx for trying this theme.

The spirit of open source, surely, is sharing and improving on other people's work. You bought it all together to make a great theme. Nice.

Having said that, what about progress bars in Transmission (BT client) that you can actually see?

 panel question

 by mistertee on: Aug 8 2009

Score 50%

First of all, I love the theme, excellent job!
Only problem and its been an issue since I started using linux 3 years ago but never figured out...only the middle of my panel uses the .png the "Applications/Place/System" section and the "username" section (that is the far left and the far right sections of the panel) don't reflect the .png behavior. If I use the "use system theme" option in the Properties the whole panel looks the same but not if I use a solid color/transparency or a .png. Any one know what I can do to fix this?

I've been using this simple change for a while now and I haven't noticed any problems:

Add the following lines to the panel.rc file

class "*Panel*MenuBar*" style "panelmenubar"
widget_class "*Panel*MenuBar*" style "panelmenubar"
widget_class "*Panel*MenuBar*Item*" style:highest "panelmenubar"

My bad, I forgot to include the style for the panelmenubar:

style "panelmenubar" = "panel"
{
engine "pixmap"
{
image
{
function = BOX
state = NORMAL
file = "Panel/trans.png"
border = { 13, 13 , 13 , 13}
stretch = TRUE
}
image
{
function = BOX
state = PRELIGHT
recolorable = TRUE
file = "Panel/panelbutton2.png"
border = { 0 , 0 , 0 , 0}
stretch = TRUE
}

}
}

note that the Panel/trans.png is simply a transparent png image

Have you read the comment introducing this theme, hum???
I don't think so.
If you always act in a hurry, I'm afraid you'll end messing up your whole distro one of these days.
So, please, read carefully when somebody's taking time and give you good advises, it'd be kind :)

So, as written at the very beginning of the post :

"I tried then to give the panel the transparency there is in the sosoft OS :)

The path should probably be : ~/.themes/Win7.Basic.02/gtk-2.0/panel.bg.png."

Thanx for your comment, I'm glad you liked the theme and I'll be pleased you use it.
Enjoy!
