I love the mockup, GNOME shell should revolve around the panel and widgets, not workspaces.

I agree. Also like to see the a simlair ability to WIndow's "Ctrl+Alt+Del" function, where eveything is freezed out (like when you have to enter your password) and the system monitor is all thats running, so that you can force kill resource drainin apps that have fallen.

I really like your mock-up it looks very good.

But... there is just one giant mistake..
Switching from window/task now takes 2 clicks instead of 1.

I have a feeling that's going to be a big pain in the ass after a while. It looks nice and clean but is not the fastest way to do things

The way I had it in mind was a vertical task-bar that automatically hides if a window is underneath it. (already possible in gnome)

It should still take only one click since, as I wrote, hovering overing the area should open the menu. Moreover, you could Alt+Tab to get there, which is the fastest way of switching application and as such could be a little more encouraged.

Anyway, thanks to all for the encouraging comments!

I think you missed his point. Hovering takes time, more time than just clicking an app shown in the panel like it is presently in gnome2. And yes, alt-tab works, but that STILL can take more time than simply clicking (or think about touch interfaces, touching..) the respective button. I like everything else about the gnome-shell I think, but this just has to be fixed. I definitely consider it a pretty big loss in usability if the gnome-shell stayed as it is in this aspect. I would definitely run kde if I was forced to use it in gnome. It really does need fixed.

 Fantastic concept

This is just great altogether. I'd really like to try out your idea for switching apps. Moving the mouse to the upper right corner and getting a list of the running applications and activities, that could work. I think this is somewhat comparable to an auto-hide dock, which is what I use now (and without any regrets or trouble, I might add). So people with doubts about this, have a try at a dock and see if you could imagine it being in the top-right corner instead of wherever you like to put it.

Also, having one panel by default I feel has to be resolved somehow. Today's monitors are generally widescreen, and I feel that I loose a lot of window space by having the vertical space taken up by the default GNOME-panel setup.

Shell integration is also fantastic. I'd really like to see this become reality.

I love it! Every time I update my Ubuntu to the newer release I expect something impressing like this to show up as desktop. It doesn't only improve usability, but it looks just the thing to show and impress people: I think linux needs it to make more people start to use it! I truly hope we see it on Gnome3!
