Description:

Hey guys,

i had this idea for some time now and i think now its time to share it with you. :)

The main idea is, that it should be possible to use every application as a plasmoid.
Based on this idea it should be possible to use the plasmoided apps in a special way (You can see how in the screenshot). The screenshot shows only two possible functions that i think could be useful.

I hope you guys like it and maybe some of the developers who can make it reality too. ;)

 Really nice idea

Thats a really good idea.

There are very nice scenarios on how to handle windows. But you really have to think about on how the windows will be stacked.

I dont know if every application should be handled as a plasmoid. What is the advantage of this?

It should be possible to decide by yourself to make a window a plasmoid. Maybe rightclick and choose "make this window a plasmoid". :) After that you should have options in the plasmoid like "attach to left screenedge" or "iconify it" or "send knotify messages if it needs attention".

 Not only a nice idea...

...this idea points to where plasma should be going to really re-invent the graphical desktop!
As I read news about KDE4, long before the release, I thought this should be the way this new desktop goes.

Yours is a great concept! I hope KDE4 developers will fall in love with that.

These features could and would be implemented in KWin. However, there is something to be said for tighter plasma integration into the applications. For example: certain portions of an application could be dragged onto the desktop as plasmoids. Iconifying a window (thumbnails aside) could instead place a thumbnail on the desktop or in a panel. Then you could have drawer of these. Of course, his would be similar to a taskbar. Or you could, with it, move in the direction of the ZUI, so you can arrange the things you're working on geographically. However, I think that any useful window management feature involving plasma would have to be a collaboration between KWin and Plasma, and not restricted to one.

 Maybe this...

Maybe this is (will be) what you are looking for: http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/playground/base/plasma/applets/embed-win/

"Embed any window as plasmoid"

Preview: http://img389.yfrog.com/i/embed.jpg/

It has been working with the KDE 4.1 and KDE 4.2...

Hey, that looks cool. That would be the first part of my suggestion. :) But the sources are a bit old.. so i think there is no real maintainer who could work on it?

An other thing is, that i/we don't know how good this code worked. I think the best solution would be, like SteveMcQwark said above, a better integration in/with kwin.

I compiled it on my machine and it works.. but with some glitches.. :) The window size of the embedded window is not set correct on startup and its a bit laggy sometimes. But overall it looks good to me.

Thats how it looks:

I have the "Embed any window as plasmoid" working from this PPA in jaunty.
https://launchpad.net/~samrog131/+archive/ppa?field.name_filter=plasmoid-embed-win&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=any

But there are some bugs with it. I have tried placing it in a panel on the left side of the screen with the Gimp Toolbox in it set to autohide. I can add it, but it shrinks it down to about a half inch making it unusable. Adding a panel spacer somewhat works if you click to resize the spacer, then clicking shows the Gimp toolbox as full vertical size. However, clicking in the gimp toolbox shrinks it down again.

This is something that is lacking in KDE. And your idea is what I have been looking for...sadly its not even on the table for any future kde releases that I know of. If someone could update this plasmoid-embed-win to fix the shrinking issue, it would actually work now.

Also, this is already a possibility in Gnome with "gnome-swallow-applet."
http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/06/make-gimp-panels-auto-hide-in-gnome.html

He did what I was trying to do with the gimp panels. I tried installing the gnome-swallow-applet that is in my OS repo but there are WAY too many gnome dependencies that it would actually install gnome.

++Also, does anyone know how to download from the http://websvn.kde.org/../ using kdesvn? I keep getting error: "Repository moved permanently to '/../../' please relocate"

I am trying to build something from source.
