Description:

UPDATE New version is currently underway. I so far have better tablet detection, the new features of xsetwacom implemented, Intuos4 OLEDs working with both images, text and animations and application profiles that automatically switch the button configuration. Please hang in there everyone, I know the current version up here sucks and this overhaul is long overdue. Check back in a month or two.

THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH UBUNTU 11.04
I will fix the compatibility issues when I have the time to do so.

You can now easily configure a wacom tablet on linux!
This utility allows you to:
- Automatically detect and configure a wide range of wacom products
- Set custom key commands or mouse buttons to a tablet's shortcut buttons
- Set custom pressure curve on each of the tablet's input devices
- Automatically remembers and reapplies settings on startup
- At present, serial and bluetooth tablets are not yet supported. If it doesn't work for you, submit a comment on here so I can fix it.
- More features coming!

HOW TO INSTALL:

Add the PPA to get the latest updates automatically!

HOW TO USE PRESSURE SUPPORT IN GIMP:

1. Open GIMP
2. In the Edit menu, click on preferences
3. Click on Input Devices
4. Click on Configure Extended Input Devices
5. For the devices; stylus, eraser and cursor, set the Mode to 'Screen'
6. Click Save, then Ok and you're done!

Dual screen problem

Thanks for this great app ! It works perfectly on my laptop... but there's still a problem with my wife's laptop.

She works as a graphic designer and uses a second screen for Gimp and Inkscape (tools on the right screen, working screen on the left one). In Gimp, it's possible to restrict the tablet to the window, showing two cursors (the "mouse" cursor and the tablet cursor) but when the mouse cursor gets on the right screen the tablet cursor is unusable. If I check "screen" in the Gimp prefs, it works fine, but then the tablet horizontal axis is false (if I draw a square on the tablet, it draws a horizontal rectangle in Gimp : logical...). It's the same in Inkscape.

Do you know if there is a way to correct this problem ?

What would be great : and option to restrict the tablet to one and only screen, and you just have to click an ExpressKey to jump to the other screen. Can't I dream ? ;-)

BTW I use an Intuos3 A5.

This is an issue way beyond the application I wrote. It's to do with the way X11 (the standard window manager on linux) redirects inputs. I may be able to find and link you to an option to disable this through the application though.

I need to know some more information however, firstly what distribution of linux, what version of what distribution.
Then I need to know what video card you are using in your laptop, if it is nvidia, or ati please tell me if it is the open source or the manufacturer's drivers. If it is nvidia, please tell me if you have TWINVIEW enabled (this is really important).
If you have neither nvidia or ati, just copy and paste the output of the command 'lspci' from a terminal to here.

Also what version of the wacom control panel are you using? If it is anything other than the latest version, then it configures the tablet in an older way that may be less configurable.

Hello, me again.

With 1.9, most of the configuration areas seem to be missing, as the subject suggests. I only have one configuration area shown at all. Perhaps there is some kind of hal .fdi file needed that I don't have that others do somewhere? Any idea where I can find this, or is it some other problem perhaps? Considering the only suggested difference is the move to hal, that makes the most sense to me. Perhaps it's only picking up the stylus.

Also, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you provide this as a plain structured tar.gz?

Apologies for posting so soon above, it seems I found information on the issue I didn't notice before. It seems I was correct.. hal can't configure one device multiple times, so it won't configure the tablet properly. Jaunty seems to have patched this with a workaround in wacom-tools that I (and probably most other distros) will need to look into.

If your distro doesn't have that patch, then go with version 1.8 - the link to that version is kept on this page for that reason. But when your distro does, it's recommended to switch to the latest version as I'll be adding stuff like input redirection configuration and more cool features.

It seems Arch does have the patch, as far as I can tell after some research -_-..

The fdi file seems to match the one in linuxwacom-dev:

/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-linuxwacom.fdi

Trying to use the given patch on the linuxwacom-dev source resulted in the console nagging at me saying its already patched and asking if I wanted to remove it instead. Looking at the source code for it vs the patch, everything I bothered to compare was there in the source already. So I don't know what the deal is. Restarting hal didn't seem to help.

When I get the time to look into this further and confirm everything is there in the source that exists in the patch against 8.2 or whatever, I will post back with a solution if any are found.

Two questions to help track this one down:
1) When you installed 1.9, the first time you started it up it should have prompted you to remove old configuration, you put in your password, then it asks you to log out. Did that happen?

2) What is the output of xinput --list

You have an older version of the wacom HAL fdi files. Yours is equivalent to Ubuntu 8.04 - where hotplugging was supported but it only gave you a mouse, no pressure, pad or multiple inputs supported. Until your distro gets updated, use version 1.8, it's not a bug or problem in my code, you just need to wait until it's updated for your distribution.

I didn't intend to suggest that it was any sort of bug of yours. I was just hoping since you wrote this program, you might have a good guess toward the root of the problem.

As for the version, I don't think that's the case unfortunately. Arch is a bleeding edge distribution. I update it daily and it nearly always has newer packages than Ubuntu, usually about the same ones as the current development ubuntu (karmic now). Arch's linuxwacom-dev I'd been using was v 0.8.3.2, whereas jaunty was at 0.8.2.2.

I took your suggestion a step further, though, and tried compiling the ubuntu wacom-tools source, which is akin to arch's linuxwacom, from jaunty. Wouldn't compile even after a patch that solved my initial error, so I gave up on jaunty's. Tried ubuntu karmic's after, and it compiled fine. I included udev rules and the kernel module (the 2nd time around anyway). Unfortunately, even after rebooting for good measure with ubuntu's wacom-tools installed (and their fdi file too of course), I still had no luck. The previous command you gave still shows the same thing afaict. Sigh.

This is a little more difficult than it should be given that my sister keeps taking her tablet to class/work with her and I'm unable to try to solve this until she's around and awake to ask for it.

I'm sorry to bother you in any case. If you've no further suggestions, I'll see what the Arch forum ppl have to say and wait it out if that proves fruitless, I suppose.

I'm afraid everything points to arch not supporting multiple input devices through HAL. This was quite a challenge and involved a restructuring of parts of HAL - to the best of my knowledge I believe alot of this was undertaken by ubuntu devs, hence why it may take a while to port over a new HAL into Arch. If you want to go ahead and post on Arch's forum, you may get a clearer answer as to why as I don't follow the development of Arch. But based on what you've posted here it very clearly points to that being the cause of the issue you're having.

FYI, whatever the problem was has been resolved on Arch afaict. All of you Archers passing by here, pacman -Syu and go ahead and install 1.9 manually or via yaourt (wacom-utility). Should be good now. If the above problems still occur, use the Testing repo or wait a while for stuff to move into the main repos.

Don't mean to bug you, but if anyone else has the problem I did at some point, I found out why an update fixed hal not working properly for this a ways back. A suggestion earlier on the pkgbuild comments to the linuxwacom maintainer was what fixed it:

"Add the configure switch "--libexecdir=/usr/lib/hal" (default is /usr/libexec , which is Arch-incompatible)."

Ie, if anyone uses a non-default hal executables directory, linuxwacom needs to be configured accordingly or it will cause that old issue (affecting this program and wacom+hal in general), even if your linuxwacom drivers are current.

This is a frontend gui for the wacom-tools package. If you have a problem with support for tablet PCs, then tell them, not me. You also could be more descriptive of what your problem actually is. Your hardware list from lspci, and what version of what OS you are running.

Hey,
Your App seems really to be great. But it doesn't work for me yet. Please help finding the problem.
I have a wacom Bamboo, lsusb:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 056a:0065 Wacom Co., Ltd
I have nothing wacom related in my xorg.conf and i get from "xinput --list"

But your tool only shows me the option tab. No Curser, eraser, pad or something like that.
What could be wrong?

- What version of wacom control panel did you download. By the looks of it you should be using the latest version made for ubuntu 9.04.

Thank You for this application, I was not sure of manually editing the config file.

Please add an option to configure mouse on Bamboo Fun to behave like a mouse. Now the mouse needs to be dragged over the whole tablet. The drag to scroll functionality of the pen can also be included.

Hi there,
Thanks for your interest however I should point out that Wacom control panel is merely a front-end for the functionality of the wacom-tools libraries, you are much better off taking up your issue with them as they maintain and provide the functionality upon which this program works.

Mouse config needed

Thank You for this application, I was not sure of manually editing the config file. Please add an option to configure mouse on Bamboo Fun to behave like a mouse. Now the mouse needs to be dragged over the whole tablet. The drag to scroll functionality of the pen can also be included.

Two questions to help track this one down:
1) When you installed 1.9, the first time you started it up it should have prompted you to remove old configuration, you put in your password, then it asks you to log out. Did that happen?

2) What is the output of xinput --list

1) No, I don't believe it did. However, I also removed the stuff from xorg.conf before running 1.9.

"Type is wacom stylus".. I don't see any others. I suppose that means I need to go digging around for why hal isn't picking up the other stuff some more?

I beg you add some tools for setting the multi monitors environments and some tools for setting mapping the working area on the tablet.
I have wrong aspect ratio monitor<->tablet so my circles are eggs.

The pen and button of my stilo, working too on my jaunty tabletPC...
pressure sensitive function ok on the Gimp..
but when start your Wacom Control Panel, on the left of the window appear:
"no graphic tablet detected".

- What version of what distro are you running? (e.g. Ubuntu 9.04)

- What version of wacom control panel did you download. By the looks of it you should be using the latest version made for ubuntu 9.04.
