Description:

kArchiver is a KDE utility made to ease working with compressed files. With kArchiver, you can create tar.gz, tar.bz2, .zip, .rar, .7z and other compressed files. You can add, remove, view one or more files with a multiselection window, password protect files... Thanks to its wizards, KArchiver can create Self-Extracting Archives ("Universal" or for Windows), split archives (to fit in a mail), convert archive format (a .tar.gz to a .rar)...
Its interface can merge with konqueror, allowing you to view and extract all of your archives within the file manager. Right-click on files to compress them, on archives to extract them in background.

Changelog:

This is a bugfixes and new features release. kArchiver now support 7z, Sit, Hqx and Ar/Deb files. The Rar archives can now be browsed by directories (like Konqueror) with a huge speed increase. The handling of password-protected archives has been enhanced. Now, the archives can be tested, and some repaired. Added the support of Rar and Zip files comments. The ArchiveInfo and ItemInfo dialog boxes have also been enhanced. During the extraction, a dialog will warn against overwriting. The complete ChangeLog is avaible on homepage.

Sorry, I too must leave a bad. karchiver states all over the place that it handles zip, bzip2, tar, and gz. However, you can't create a new zip archive? You can't create a new bzip2? What gives? I was expecting an application that not only extracts, but updates/creates. When trying to integrate my linux box (unix admin in a microsoft corp) one of the biggest things I have to deal with is creating zips (email blocks many things if I don't zip it)...and so far, I've not found a good gui for doing such things. Please don't mention command line...obviously that's what I have resorted to for a long time. I was hoping this application would provide a "clicky" solution that integrates with kde.

Please continue this project further! This looks soooo appealing!

FourJ's

Creating a new archive is out of my skill. Only way: copy an old one with konqueror, then rename it, then open it with karchiver, delete the content, then you can add files and build archives. Funny isn'it.
I give up, uninstall it, and go back to ark.

 request - menu & rar

1.

compress support for zip and rar

2.

The Arc popupmenu should be editable from within the programm.
And the default menu should be changed.

current default is:

Arc
Preview with Arc
Action
->create tar.gz
->create bzip
->unpack...
->unpack here

better would be:

Arc
->open with Arc
->compress
-->to tar.gz
-->to bzip
-->to zip
-->to rar
->uncompress
-->to subdir
-->to current dir
-->to mothers dir
-->to ...

regards phob

 Excellent Tool

After making sure that I met all of the compression libs/apps requirements, I built karchiver on Ark Linux. karchiver performed beautifully, from simple tars to tar.bz2 and zips, not a problem.

Since I'm stuck working on/repairing winmachines from time to time, I need to create self extracting file. With karchiver, doing so is a snap! IMHO this feature alone makes it worth having!

I just brought the test.exe to "PoorOldBastard" my winmachine and decompressed the repair tools without a problem.

Ark (the compression tool) Krusader, kbackup and karchiver are all must have tools. This lot should get together to create a super tool.Perhaps create a super new compression format.

If you lads do, I have a name for it "Singularity" as in a Black Hole.

Well done to the devel!

Thanks.
