Description:

Sometimes when I want to enter a password into kwallet's popup window I accidently enter it in my IM window and press Enter... ;P (I don't know in which way the focus is lost and IM gets it, sometimes it just happens to me)

How it would work?
Much like a logout screen (or that administrative popups in Vista) - everything besides kwallet's popup would get darker or something like that. Only window that I could interact with woult be this popup.

Ability to minimise this popup (with whole "blocking" dark, semi-transparent layer) would be good idea too.

What do you think? (It could be just an option tu turn on)

Maybe you have some other ideas about it?

There is option to set focus stealing.

System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Focus (tab) and from there the "Focus stealing prevention level.

There is too the KWin effect plugin to darker the mainwindow or the root window. Hopefully this would get special setting for KWallet.

Focus stealing prevention doesn't work the way I would (I must click too much when the prevention level is high)

About this KWin effect... its almost exactly what I want but it works only in particular (main)windows, it doesn't darker whole screen.
(Which is good in case of usual popups but not in case of kwallet's popup)

Then do it by classic way... right click the Kwallet dialog -> Advanced -> Special Window Settings. And from there "Preferences" tab and "Accept focus" to "force" and "Keep Above" to force.

Now when every time you get KWallet asking password, the focus is there by forced. ;-)

Those are workaround not good implementations. KWallet should get the focus automatically. And it's a problem all around KDE, focus doesn't work well, sometimes you even had dialogs that appear behind your window, that's non-sense.

Well, KWallet is normal window what follows KWin rules. And it need to follow users settings.

What would need to do, is to make the "Always top" and "Force focus" features by default on. Just like there is default setting for xv application.

And then there could be idea to add a new option there, like "use like admin window". So when that is checked to window/application settings, it will get black background like the KWin effect would give to root window. This way user can still control the work, but we do not need any special hacks to make it happend.

Why? Because I know two people who do not like at all that some window pop-ups and forces the focus on it, when they are doing other stuff on other application.

It is treated as a normal window, but it isn't a normal window. Any window asking for passwords can be treated as a normal window. What the poster said originally is awfully true, you normally end writing the password somewhere else, this is serious... Computers hold important information these days, it isn't like he just want to hide something little.

Also, if you're gonna prevent focus stealing it should work logically, the window on top (by KDE standards) is the one with the focus, if you aren't going to give it focus, don't put it on top of everything...

There is reasons why window can be top of others, without having focus forced on it. I use lots of that feature, for example in video windows, GIMP, konsole etc. I can do other tasks on window what is behind the other window, what I can see trough or the top window does not block the area what I need.

The default settings for KWallet could be that it is top and it gets focus.

Not even Windows Vista/7 show the UAC dialog if the focus is on other application that the original what asked the admin rights. The UAC dialog stays behind and it flashes the taskbar. Like Kwallet.

If user can not notice that what he types, does not get to Kwallet dialog, something might be wrong between monitor and keyboard too ;-)

The focus stealing can be very annoing in different situations. And thats why it might be best that dialog does not steal the focus if you have switched to other application between that.

This two people and me could always minimise this popup with it's dark layer :-)
I don't loke to be bothered with some popups too when I do something important, that's why I mentioned ability to minimise popup in description.

The matter is to know that I'm supposed to enter private information at the moment and that I'll enter it into right window.

Well, if you need to minimize the pop-up window, it has already ruined your own focus to other task and then there is no need to minimize it because you can just give the password and hit enter/OK.

If you are login to kopete, you press "connect" and you switch right away to write email, the Kwallet should not pop-up stealing focus because you are writing an email. The focus does change to Kwallet if the original application what asked Kwallet is focused. Like kopete -> login -> Kwallet. But if you change to other window or other window is active like kopete -> login -> konsole, the Kwallet should not get focus. Same thing is for autologin. You start kopete trought Krunner and it is set to autologin, you continue using irssi on konsole and Kopete ask Kwallet password. It shouln't be focused, but the konsole because Kopete did not have focus on it first.

There are different ways what people like and thats why it is good that there is options for this kind funcionality like what KWin offers ;-)
