Description:

KDevelop is a plugin based IDE that currently supports C++ and PHP, different build tools, integrated documentation formats, integrated revision control systems and dozens of other neat tools. All these are plugins and there are plenty examples on how to add your own plugins.

It should also compile on Mac OSX (PowerPC), MS Windows and Solaris, but these platforms are sadly unmaintained. Help welcome!

Build tools: CMake, custom makefiles, generic scripts. (Experimental: QMake, Autotools, ...)

Integrated Documentation: QtHelp, CMake, PHP.net

Revision Control Systems: CVS, Git (KDev 4.1), SVN, (Experimental: Mercurial)

Development Support with code completion, as-you-type-reports, context browsing etc. pp:
- Anything in C++/C , e.g.: Qt, gtk, wxWindows, superwabba, GBA, ...
- Anything in PHP.

"Simple" language support for tons of other languages with the feature set found in Kate.

Other plugins: console, debugger (gdb), find-in-files, classviewer, snippets, external scripts, ...

I compiled KDevelop, or the famous aka name Gideon, and I was surprised and got bad impressions. KDevelop in its previous versions was something that setisfied all programmers needs, real IDE, perfect tool! Now we have KDevelop 3.0, and it is worst version of KDevelop I have ever seen and tried. Aren't the things supposed to be better in their latter versions?

I still use KDevelop 2.1 and It is very stable, perfect! it is IDE...

There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path! If it is c:\ it will crash..

i don't use an IDE personally, but i've heard nothing but good things about KDevelop3. what in particular about KDevelop3 did you find so inferior to 2.1?

I personnally think that Kdevelop 3 is easily the best Linux IDE I've ever worked under. I used to dislike kdevelop2, but version 3 blew me away. It is simple & powerful at the same time. I especially like the new IDEA mode, which lets you see your code fullscreen. Doxygen integration is great, and since the IDE, it is plugin oriented, it gives room for extension... thanks to the developpers.

I used KDevelop 2.1 for about 3 months before switching to KDevelop 3 and it is a HUGE improvement. The auto-conf manager takes some getting used to, but once you do it is much more flexible and powerful. I absolutely love it! Before 3, I would do most of my development in VC7 and then port to linux. Now I'm doing it the other way around. Kudos to the team!

Decoding, I'm not sure what you were looking at but I've got to assume you 1) either didn't spend much time with it, or 2) you had something wrong with your installation. When I installed initially, I wasn't setting my --prefix correctly for KDE so I wasn't getting any toolbars or icons (which basically made KDevelop look like a bad text editor).

My only complaint, and this is probably a misunderstanding on my part, is that I have been unable to create subfolders within my projects without compiling them as libraries. Anyone know if this is by design?

I used kdevelop 2 long time before version 3 exist. Version 2 is not so intuitive but it works. Especialy version 2.1.5 is very stable. Now I use kdevelop 3 and I must say it is not so stable. It crashes during documentation brwosing and some other things. I dislike the IDEA mode because it is pedantically in my daily work. But the tabbed mode fit my needs.
I have problems with the make-tools editor. How I can add a existing file and then define a target where the file should copied during a "make install"? I kdevelop 2 was it quite easy but in kdevelop 3 I don't see any easy way to do this.

other thing are the file groups. I spilt my projects into "heade, source, gnu, icons, ...". It is possible to change the predefined groups, but you have to do this for each project. It is not possible to change the given groups permanently. This is a little bit anoying.

But kdevelop 3 goes the right way but it is far away from a stable and usefull version for all the user needs. (But it can fit to all needs of some users, but not for all!)

The documentation browsing crash is well known and very frustrating. http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76558
One workaround is to set the project's documentation settings to show _all_ installed documentation sets. The doctree does some odd things to hide documentation sets that makes the Qt style plugin crash.
The bug is IMHO in the style code, but the documentation plugin is currently being rewritten, so the next release should have a better documentation system and not have this problem.

The File Groups comment is a good point. You should register a wish report about that so it's not forgotten. http://bugs.kde.org/

KDevelop 2.1 is not perfect, but it is much easier to use and work with.
I found a lot of problems with the 3.x versions. For one I opened a bug at bugs.kde.org, because copy and paste does not work. Copy and Paste is essential for me when editing code.
This problem from May is still open, I have the feeling, nobody is interested in it.

I also remain developing with version 2.1.

Yes, you're right : I tried the version 3.0.1 and it is not stable at all : it doesn't work. That's pity because it looks good.

I,m newby in Linux and development... And my english isn't good, so sorry...

Here is: i've got a project (C++) build in Kdevelop2, and now i've install Fedora 3, with kdevelop3... i can't open that project (project name=CARD.kdevelop)... Gives me this errors:
"This is not a valid project file.
XML error in line 5, column 35:
error occurred while parsing element"

Can you help me please? Thanks...

Ok, good. I feel better knowing that it wasn't just ignorance on my part (not exclusively anyway). I've also found that KDevelop3 RC1 seems a little buggy when you start moving into areas other than C++ projects. Anytime I create a PHP project I crash almost instantly and after creating a Python project (using the simple script wizard with both), I crash when I start adding classes. I'd be happy to work with a developer if these are not well-known issues.

I much prefer quanta for php, you have all the documentation right their and in many projects I do mix Javascript, HTML and php. Quanta rocks! KDevelop is an excellent IDE, I can't wait to try this version for my C++ projects.
Has anyone had experience with KDevelop + Java? I'm currently using eclipse but find it sloooow! Why is it Java IDE's always seem to be written in Java? I've never had much luck getting good performance out of anything but small projects. Its great for servlets and web backends, but for desktop apps it's a dog!

If you had read the requirements page of the website you would have seen that you need to downgrade the Berkley DB version.
