Description:

The latest stable release of Quanta Plus and other useful programs for web developing, including Kommander, KImageMapEditor, KXSLDbg, KFileReplace, KLinkStatus, gathered under the name of KDEWebDev - KDE Web Development.

This was released as part of KDE 3.5.6.




Changelog:

The release contains fixes in Quanta Plus.
Bugfixes:
- show Find in Files menu if KFileReplace is installed. Fixes bug 132530.
- fix various crashes in the debugger. Fixes bug 137483.
- fix crash when editing a CSS area
- use the correct encoding in the file dialogs. Fixes bug 138343.
- don't lose upload profile settings in certain cases
- fix symlink handling in Project Rescan, New Project adding files/folders. Fixes bug 138107.
- do not set the current project mark to a project that could not be opened. Fixes bug 137186.
- allow closing of an untitled editor tab when an image is previewed inside. Fixes bug 134534.
- fix problems with the automatic backup system

Well, you are not forced to use it. Remember Quanta is mainly developed in the free time of developers (and this is especially true for VPL) and it's offered to you for free. Complaints like yours are anything but useful.
And just for your information, the VPL part was developed by a single person, who is still a student and doesn't have much time to work on Quanta. Neverless he did quite an impressing job. And as VPL is based on KHTML's editing possibilities (which were close to none when VPL development has started and there were cases when KHTML imposed a limitation) as soon as KHTML improves (and it improves and will improve) VPL will improve as well.
Thankfully a new developer has recently joined the project and there are good signs from the KHTML people, so the future of VPL looks good. Until that you can use Frontpage and enjoy the mess it generates.

Hey thanks for the encouragement! You are what makes open source great! It's comforting to know that an initial effort by a student in France is no threat to a multi billion dollar company throwing everything at it.

VPL is very much incomplete feature wise. However for those lacking the fundamental understanding of markup to discern the difference VPL already has three advantages over FlunkPage. (Coincidentally they are what we said it would have.)

  1. It creates valid DTD specific markup.

  2. It does not reformat your entire document, but only formats the node you edit.

  3. The CVS version adds access to a full set of CSS tools for styling.


Admittedly it has some pretty glaring shorcomings now. Undo/redo and copy and paste proved to be far more complex and unstable than we hoped on the first try. Sorry we failed to live up to your expectations on the first try. Then again you probably aren't old enough to remember MS Windows 1.0 and 2.0 where MS got the reputation that none of their software was worth using until version 3. That makes a student in France look pretty good next to a multi billion dollar company... but after reading your comments maybe we should beat Nicolas up anyway.

Of course that would not be wise as we continue to work on VPL. The foundational groundwork is there for the rest of the features though the 3.3 time line is making it hard to add much of it. However by 4.0 we should have all the basic features and XML editing with XSLT and other things I doubt Flunkpage will have. I invite you to continue your extremely inefficient non CSS based static page nightmare on software built by criminals though. You'll want to avoid our highly productive Rapid Object Templates since we suck and the interface may be too innovative for windoze users.

BTW I'm pleased to say that your testing, patches, suggestions and donations did not suck. Then again that was really easy not to do... wasn't it? Thanks for helping to make open source excellence a reality. VPL has been a monumental task and we appreciate your encouragement to continue it.

Actually, I agree with his criticism. I am very happy about any kind of wysiwyg html editor on linux and quanta goes a first step, but after reading the glorious announcements of eric laffoon and others on dot.kde.org or elsewhere I expected, well, a little more. Far more, to be honest.

I believe, the quanta developers should be careful in what they announce and in how they are doing this. From now on I am not encouraged any more to try any new versions of Quanta.

I've just really used Quanta v3.2.3 for the first time and found one thing that made me think "this can't be right" - but I'm not sure - maybe its wanted behavior, cause it's such a simple thing.
If I mark an element in source mode, rightclick it and paste something else over it the marking is gone and instead of replacing the marked text with the newly pasted one it gets inserted in between (where ever I right clicked) - this is different from pretty much any program that comes to my mind - and even stranger. The "paste" under "Edit" works as expected.

Hmm, just wanted to point that one out =)

What you see should be a Katepart bug in your KDE, but as I see it is fixed in the upcoming KDE 3.3.

First off... I'd like to thank those responsible for this editor's development! Thanx!

Second, I have installed this 'over' my installed version that came with the downloadable Mandrake10-Official and all has gone fine... so far. Yes, VPL editing is slow... but it works! That's about all there is to be said.

Let those who make vain insults on this fine app just go ahead and 'buy' thier editors. Myself, I don't need anything really faster.

If ya want a bit more speed to your editing, just sellect a split-view of VPL and source... doing all the actual 'editing' in the source window, using the VPL as a place to click and get the sellected VPL to sellect in the source window... a 'finder' of sorts. For the 'couple of characters' editing, VPL is fine by itself.

Again, great work on this fine editor!

...and then there was freedom. Win32 was no longer bounding my freedom to create... Life was better, here in Penquinland!

Hi, when I try to uploads files with changes the dialog don't show this files (the modified ones) automatically with this new versión (mine says quanta 3.2.92 Beta2 (07-15-2004) is this the last??)what is wrong???

First be sure that the upload status of those files is not set to Never (upload). Check the context menu of them in the Project tree. Second now (in CVS version), if you use the Upload File or Upload Folder menus to upload something and not the Upload Project, even files with the Never upload status are selected for upload as the user deliberately wants to upload those.
See the ChangeLog for a description of the upload status feature.

I must say that the VPL, even if not able to do _all_ tasks that pure code can, still fullfills my need.

to let friends edit the content of their pages without having to understand the code and where to write what.

point at what to edit, and edit :)
(I won't be using VPL myself until there is some way for me to give the editor a syntax-ruleset so that I can specify in which order the id="" src="" and so on comes as well as amount of spaces, tabs etc.)

thanks for a really good editor!
(little cluttered default, as the rest of kde, but I'll manage :)
