Description:

A Gmail notification widget for your desktop or panel.

This widget is designed to be docked in a panel, or added to your desktop, and display the number of unread messages in multiple Gmail accounts. Clicking on the widget will open the Gmail account in your favorite browser. The widget is written in python, meaning that there is no compiling necessary as long as you have the required script-engine installed.

For more screenshots visit the project homepage.

Features:
- *NEW* New simplified version re-implemented in qml and javascript available for testing (very early version with little error checking and many features missing and/or removed).
- *NEW* New qml version likely requires KDE 4.8 (but may work with KDE 4.7).
- *NEW* Testing qml version will coexist with existing gmail-plasmoid (testing version is called gmail-plasmoid-qml).
- *NEW* Any comments regarding new qml version appreciated.

- Selectable fetching mechanism to address multiple issues (see "Misc." configuration tab)
- Dynamic network connection detection
- Bulgarian, Chinese Traditional, Czech, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Spanish and Ukrainian translations
- Supports multiple Gmail accounts and Gmail labels
- Supports Gmail hosted domains
- Uses KWallet to securely store passwords
- Configurable icon and text font, size and color
- Configurable command run upon clicking the widget
- Configurable notifications using the KDE notification system
- Includes notification for when no unread emails exist (useful for running command to turn off message indicator LEDs, etc.)
- "Check email now" menu option to force email check upon command
- Ability to manually pause and resume email checking
- Threads context menu that shows unread messages on right-click

Please let me know if you find any problems or would like some new features included. The best place to request new features is on the project's homepage.

How to install:
- Download the latest version
- Uninstall any previous version (see instructions below)
- Run the following command in the directory where the file was placed (updated to reflect the actual filename):

Quote:
plasmapkg -i gmail-plasmoid-0.7.20.plasmoid

- The widget should now be listed in your "Add Widgets" screen

Note: If you get missing script-engine errors when loading the widget you need to install the plasma python script-engine (in openSUSE this requires the "python-kdebase4" and "python-devel" packages, in Fedora this requires the "kdebase-workspace-python-applet" package, in Kubuntu this requires the "plasma-scriptengine-python" package)

How to uninstall:
- Run the following command at the command line:

Quote:
plasmapkg -r gmail-plasmoid

 Install Failure Kubuntu Jaunty

by mluffman on: May 5 2009

Score 50%

Fresh install of Jaunty 9.04. I have the following packages installed:

python-plasma
python 2.6-dev
python 2.6.2
python-kde4

Installation still fails. Am I missing a package? It seems others have no problem on Jaunty, but no matter what I do, it still won't install. Ideas?

Thanks!

I can confirm that the widget does work on Jaunty, but others are having similar problems to the one you are facing. I have two suggestions that will hopefully narrow down the issue. First, I would try creating a new user and installing the widget for that user. If that works then there may be a configuration file issue with your standard account. Second, if this does not work then please email me the exact error you are getting and I can look into it further.

I'm not sure if it is any help, but here is an example of someone else who solved the same issue: http://code.google.com/p/gmail-plasmoid/issues/detail?id=8

Ok, confirmed that it does install on a new account. Can you give me an indication of what configuration files may be causing the problem in my account?

Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure, but the first thing I would try is to see if there are any bits lying around from a previous install. First try running the following command “plasmapkg -r gmail-plasmoid” and then make sure to delete any “gmail-plasmoid” directory that might exist under “~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids”. Hopefully that will allow you to install the plasmoid.

If that does not work then maybe it is something in your plasma configuration. You can remove these configuration files but you may have to re-configure all of your plasmoids and set your desktop back up. If that is something you are willing to do then you need to remove plasma* from the KDE config directory. I believe the following command would do so “rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*”

Let me know if either of these solutions works.

Success! I had to remove a gmail-plasmoid directory that was under ~/.kde/share/apps/plasma/plasmoid.

I think when I ran the installer originally, I must have run it using sudo because I had to sudo the rm command to get rid of it.

Anyway, it's installed now. Thanks for all your assistance!

 Labels not working

Hi,
I can't get my labels to be recognized. What do I need to add in the labels field. For instance, I have a ARTFL label, but I can't get it to work, whether I just put ARTFL or INBOX/ARTFL. Thanks!

You should be able to simply put the name of the label in the “label” field. The widget then adds the label to the end of the atom feed url. For example, entering ARTFL as the label will cause the widget to use the following atom feed (assuming you are not on a hosted domain):

https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/ARTFL

You can try entering that address in a browser to see if you get the response expected, and let me know if you continue to have problems and I can put a debugging version together to dig deeper into the issue.

Hi,
Thanks. It ended up being a problem with the gmail aggregator which doesn't support labels being inside the Inbox folder. For instance, my ARTFL label really was INBOX/ARTFL. So I just renamed my label to ARTFL and that worked. Thanks again!

 Got old version working...

by brayellison on: May 9 2009

I tried messing around with the 0.7.1 version for a while removing and reinstalling and removing... adding KDE 4.2.3 on Kubuntu 9.04 and couldn't get anything to work. So I was like, "Hey, maybe the old version will still work..." and so I downloaded it, made sure previous installations were removed and then did the

plasmapkg -i gmail-plasmoid-0.7.0.plasmoid

command in the directory and it installed. I did however have a plasma crash, but I think that's because the "Add Widgets" deal was open when I installed it. It restarted plasma, I opened up Add Widgets, and BOOM it was there. Just configured it and it works fine. Thought this might be helpful to the Kubuntu users that are having troubles with it.

Thanks for posting this information. I would be interested to know if the latest version (0.7.2) works for you in Kubuntu. I have been unable to replicate any of the Kubuntu issues in a virtual machine, making these issues difficult for me to track down.

First of all, congratulations for your plasmoid. I have the problem below: it shows a red X icon. When i try to excecute it with plasmoidviewer i get that in console:
findServiceByDesktopPath: not found
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/kde4/apps/plasma_scriptengine_python/pyappletscript.py", line 19, in <module>
from PyQt4.QtCore import *
ImportError: /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.5/PyQt4/QtCore.so: undefined symbol: PyExc_ValueError
What can i do? (i have plasma-scriptengine-python installed)

Hopefully we can fix this problem. I have gotten errors like that before and it was caused by a missing package. Under openSUSE you must also install the “python-devel” package. In Debian I believe that it is called “python-dev”. Do you have that package installed?

If this solves your problem or you find another solution please let me know so I can update the widget description for other Debian users. Thanks!

Thank you, python-dev was the required package. Just one more thing; When checking for network connection i got 'Network Connection Down', (Solid.Networking.status() had value 1), so i remarked that test and works fine. If there is a better way please tell.
Thank you!

I'm not sure why KDE is returning the wrong value for whether the network is up. I have had that problem before and restarting my computer fixed the issue. If the issues persists I think it may be a bug in KDE.

Thanks for the feedback. This password problem can happen if you do not have kwallet enabled. Unfortunately there is an issue with KIO not remembering passwords without kwallet enabled (even if you check the box to remember passwords). To enable kwallet, go into the "System Settings", go to the "Advanced" tab, select "KDE Wallet" and enable it.

If this does not fix your problem please let me know and we can dig deeper to try and figure out what is going wrong.

 Re: this plasmoid needs features

Stanfd, thanks for the feedback and I will try to address your issues below:

1) The plasmoid uses the KDE notification system for playing sounds and displaying popup messages. If you are having clipping problems it is an issue with your KDE installation.

2) To view mail you need to first configure your browser under the “command” entry on the configuration screen. Make sure to include “%u” in the correct place in the command line so that the url to gmail is passed to the browser. That command will then be used when you click on the plasmoid, thus opening your gmail account in your preferred browser.

3) Deleting messages is done though the gmail web interface, and these changes will be reflected the next time the plasmoid polls your gmail account. Due to the nature of the gmail authentication mechanism I cannot easily add the ability to delete emails or mark emails as read from the plasmoid itself.

This plasmoid is designed to simply notify you when new emails arrive in your gmail account, nothing more. I hope this helps address your issues, and please contact me if you have any other questions or suggestions.
