Description:

KNetworkConf is a KDE Control Center Module to configure the Network
settings in a simple and intuitive way. It has the following
features:

* Configure installed network devices (you can't add new ones for now) in
basic and advanced mode (ie. don't auto configure broadcast and netmask
values).
* Autodetection of wireless interfaces.
* Configure the default gateway and gateway device.
* Configure host and domain names.
* Add/remove DNS servers (/etc/resolv.conf).
* Add/Remove known Hosts (/etc/hosts).

KNetworkConf works now in 13 different platforms:

* BlackPanther OS
* Conectiva Linux
* Debian Linux
* Fedora Linux
* FreeBSD
* Gentoo Linux
* Mandrake Linux
* OpenNA Linux
* Polish Linux Distribution
* Red Hat Linux
* Slackware Linux
* TurboLinux

KNetworkConf uses the Gnome System Tools (gst)
(http://www.gnome.org/projects/gst/) network backend to find out the network
values in a platform-independient manner. This backends are a bunch of perl
scripts that use XML files to communicate with different frontends.

NOTE:You don't need to have GNOME nor GST installed AT ALL to run
KNetworkConf. The network backend comes included.

Changelog:

- Ugraded network backend to GST 1.1.4
- Support for two new platforms: Specifix and Vine Linux, being now 15 the platforms supported.
- Parcial wireless support: Autodetection of wireless network interfaces.
- New dialog for managing static hosts.
- Many User Interface enhaments.
- Lots of bug fixes
- Lots of code cleanups
- Updated spanish, french, german, polish and norewian translations.

 Nice tool but

I was so happy when I saw your screenshots. Finally a GUI to setup the network under KDE BUT
why to use the GST backend ???? I have to install the gnome libraries to use it ???
That a strange KDE app :)

By the way GST is working with Slackware with newer version.

You don't need any Gnome libraries installed. GST is included in the tarball. You don't have to worry about it at all.

Only the GST network backend is included, not all of GST.

 Gentoo support?

 by EliasP on: Jan 14 2004

Would it be possible to make it supporting Gentoo? Or is one of the other already supported distributions using Gentoo's init and configuration scheme?

Greetings

Elias P.

Please ask to the GST team http://www.gnome.org/projects/gst/team.html to add support for gentoo.

 KControl-Module?

Hi!
It would be nice if you could implement this as a kcm.
I think such things belong to the control center.
With kcmshell it would be still possible to use it on it's own.

Just my 0,02 EUR

It looks great! I hope it also is a seed for KDE going beyond the desktop and into configuration of hardware and services - an area currently dominated by distro apps - eventually growing into a KDE equivalent to say YaST.

 wish list

 by linuxeqed on: Jan 22 2004

This app is close for me.. why is the default gateway not associated with the device? meaning one gateway(route) for everything? that doesn't make sense to me. I could probably us this except I would need a couple things..
1.
currently I have to issue commands
ifdown eth0
ifup eth0=homenet
or
ifup eth0=worknet

where homenet and worknet are defined in /etc/network/interfaces
so I would have to be able to alias the device in the console and start the appropriate one.. I used to have something similar on Redhat/ximian for gnome. but now I am on debian and KDE.
2.
support the dynamic defining of dns servers using resolvconf package.
Thanks for listening..

You can only have one DEFAULT gateway, the rest are routes to other hosts or networks. If what you want is to be able to setup routes to other networks, that is not currently supported but planned for a future version.

The other two things you mention seems to be in 1., support for profiles and 2., I don't quite understand, because you actually CAN edit the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf. Can you explain exatly what do you mean?

I've got packages for Debian Sid over at http://qerub.ondska.net/debian/kde-debian/
They will probably be moved to kde-debian.org's package pool soon.
Packaging bugs to qerub@home.se.
