 I don't understand

by jayenell on: Apr 11 2004

Score 50%

Why does this app have so may votes. Me personally I really dislike SIM.

1. It's ugly. ok, that can really be personally, but all those confusing lines and those ugly icons.
2. It does not follow KDE look & Feel
3. It's userunfriendly
4. After I logged in and started the first chat, my PC freezed!!! Hard-reboot was needed.

So sorry to interupt your party, but Kopete is much, much better. Yes I stay with Kopete and I understand why it's not included in kdenetwork.

On the other hand, a lot of people like it, so somewhere there must be something they like, but I don't know what. Tell me?

Cheers,

J

Sim is very themeable, and you can get the look you want, including the use of Miranda icons which can be downloaded. Sim isn't a KDE app, it is designed to run on Windows platforms as well, and as a result doesn't conform to KDE's way of doing things. But that's a small issue really, considering the amount of KDE'ers who use non kde apps like Gimp!
As far as the crashing goes on your system, if you talk to the developers, they might be able to find a solution for you. Sim is working really well for me other than a few quirks, but I've found it on par with Kopete.

kopete does not support multiple codetables. thats enough reason for me for not using it - 50% of my friends use cyrillic1251

It *does* follow the kde Look n Feel. The problem are the RPMs. Compile it yourself and set the prefix to the KDE directory and all the KDE themes are available for SIM.

 pop up new message?

by oshogg on: Apr 15 2004

Score 50%

Hi,

I really like SIM and have been using it for a while. The only irritating behavior I have found is that when I receive a new message from a friend, the sim icon in the taskbar starts to flash but I do not see a window pop up with the message. I have to open the sim window and then click on that friend to see the message.

I am sure there must be a way to configure SIM so that whenever I receive a new message from a friend and a conversation with that friend is not on-going; it automatically pops up the window. But, I can't find such a configuration option. Could you please tell how to achieve this behavior?

thanks,
Osho

While many users find this annoying, you may enable pop-up new messages.

For this, go Setup->Interface->'Messages' tab and there choose either 'Open and minimize' or 'Open and raise'.

normally kde prevents fokus stealing, which causes this problem.

I think it was solved in CVS. but you can solve it yourself by decrease kde's focus stealing prevention in control bar.
sorry dunno where exactly.

Personally, I find SIM to be a good program, but I cannot honestly rate it at higher than Kopete.

Kopete has a much cleaner and more attractive interface that integrates seamlessly with KDE, SIM has little integration going for it making it no better than GAIM.

I think either some script kiddies have been busy here or I am missing something. If this is rated at an astonishing 94% I would expect Kopete to be rated at least a 90%, definitely not 83%.

Kopete has nice interface but it have NO support of encoding changing. I am sure it was written by english-speaking-lammoz. Thay have no idea that many people have other encoding than default system encoding.

SIM will rule until kopete implement per contact ecoding changing. After this where will be a real fight.

Unicode works fine for me (using mostly ICQ). An honestly what other encoding should I use? I need German Umlauts and Cyrillic at the same time.

There is encoding support for icq, you can set a per-contact encoding in the userinfo dialog of that contact. It's planned to move that to a more user-visible place though.

Kopete has lots of functions still to implement, which sim already has a long time.

I personally use miranda under wine, but sim is my second choice.
kopete simply has just a little set of features and configurations.

 A Feature Request

by oshogg on: Apr 21 2004

I would like better support for proxy.

I use SIM on my laptop which is used both at home (without proxy) and at work (with proxy). What I would like is that I have to change my proxy settings at one place only and all the appliations should pick it up there. I typically change the proxy configuration in the konqueror settings and it is picked up by other KDE applications (such as weather applet - for example).

If KDE support is compiled then SIM should also honour the konqueror proxy settings (for all protocols). Also, whenever proxy configurations change; sim should just reconnect without having to quit and restart.

Something like this will make SIM just the most perfect Chat app on linux :).

cheers,
Osho

 Great app but...

Does anybody know how to change the strange behaviour of chat window in SIM 0.9.3 in KDE 3.2.
When the message arrives and the chat window is already opened in another desktop then after double click on SIM icon in tray, the chat window moves the the current desktop. But it is in background (behind other applications). It should be in foreground and active. It was working good in older versions of SIM :-(

Thanks for any help.

Try this.

Make sure that in Sim's Setup -> Interface -> Messages -> New message, you have selected Open and raise.

Now, right click on any Window's title bar and select Configure Window Behavior. In the configuration box that pops up, select Advanced on the left side. Set Focus stealing prevention level to None. This solved this problem for me.

YMMV.

 SIM is very good

For some time something hold me away from trying SIM. I would screw my ICQ account several time with kopete which would display me ICQ numbers instead of real names, i have gaim crash on me every time i do something like click cancel while it connects. This app is really usable! Ok, i miss dcop and fancy message popup or message count in taskbar but lots of others things are so cool, i got addicted to them, such as "typing" icon in the buddy list or that buddy list disapear if i don't use it, "quote" message feature is cool, all menus are customizable ....

I'd love to see DCOP binding which would do the same thing as middle-button on the tray when it's flashing - popup incoming message, would use with global shortcut.

Thanks, Vladimir, best IM so far.

I configured OSD to look like miranda's popup in windows or kopete's popup:
give OSD a background, lower right corner, and voila!

U even can have different colors for contact groups or even single users, and double clicking the popup opens the message.
