desktop=home directory.

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

I think the desktop in kde isn\\\'t too useful, the way it is now: the personal files are in the home directory, and having all that room for the \\\"system\\\" and \\\"trashbin\\\" icons looks like a waste. but even using it as another directory where to store personal files look senseless and a bit confusing.

so, why don\\\'t we change by defautlt the path dot the desktop to the one for the home directory?

this will cause immediate and easy access to all the personal files and, with the help of a smart set of directories (like: images, texts, videos, music projects, downloads, packages - theese are my ones, at least), will let everything you can need be immediately disposable.

uh: another good idea is to make differents icons for each of theese personal folders. take a look on the screenshot.

I thing we could integrate a tool like the mac directly on the desktop.

- transparent svg desing
- use the 3d like xgl to navigate on a file
- navigation by columns
- The possibility to move any part of the desktop finder with the mouse
- preview of picture
- a file with all icones of software
- a button to open a root session on a file. Usefull to edit Xorg setting.
- the integration of k2b on the desktop finder. To burn a cd we drag an drope the file on the k3b icone and we click on "burn"
- the integration of Ark. W click on the file.tar and it open on the desktop-finder

etc.

This really needs arguments? I thought, the wish was so senseless, that it doesn't need any more commentations. But well...

I really don't want to have a totally overloaded desktop with an absolutly confusing number of files and directories on it.
My desktop has to be clear and lightweight, not overloaded with Icons.

The Desktop has to be a subdirectory of ~ as it is now and as it will ever, ever be.

ok, but:
a. as i said before, taking a look on the screenshot will show you how, with a logical management of the home folder, the desktop won't be absolutely overloaded, and
b. what's the use of the desktop, right now? i can't see it.

Where's the problem to create symlinks to your video-, music-, downloads-, and whatever-folder in your ~/Desktop directory?
Why should the kde-team dictate how we have to use our desktop? Why should they bind us to the home-directory for our desktop where all the directories and files lays, which I've downloaded or on which I'm working on?? Why the hell should they suppose that every single user is able to keep his home-directory clean and lightweight enough to not get crazy about his overloaded and exploding desktop??

Why shouldn't they better give us the possibility to do which our desktop what we want (ie create symlinks in the subfolder ~/Desktop or whatever)???

Where is the sense behind your wish? I really doesn't see one single point which could be a reason for such curious wish.

Btw... the actual use of the desktop is to have a clean desk on which you can place really important or really useful things like some knotes, some karamba-themes (rss, calendar, clock, whatever) and Icons to applications which you're using very often.
It is (here on my machine) a clean place where I can relax and where I can think about my life and what I can do to make my desktop look even more better than at this moment.
-> http://werist.dma147.info/gallery/index.php?twg_album=Screenshots&twg_show=screenshot-2007-01-09.jpg

It really is not and should never be a bloated, overloaded and confusing thing, full of work and remembering things what I still have to do and should not forget.

But hey... everyone should have the desktop which he wants. And exactly this is the reason why the desktop should *never* be the ~ directly.

 Free my desktop!

Yeah, in fact I wanted to write "Keep my desktop clean" but I was short of one letter :þ

The reason why I'm against this is simple: I want to keep my desktop free of icons and folders. If you use your home directory as desktop, every document you place in it will be visible on your desktop. What about people who have plenty of documents? They will have their desktop polluted with them, won't they?

Moreover, I use my desktop as a temporary place to store files before I move them, wherease my home directory is a permanent folder. With this idea, this would be more difficult.

if you take a look on the screenshot, you can see that there's not that lot of icons. if your home folder is organized in subdirectories - how i humbly think it should be - you'll have just the subdirs icons ^^

I agree. I use the desktop as a temporary folder, and if I want to have my other folders on my desktop for easy access, I will just make a link to them. Maybe you could try that? This is a valid idea though, so in KDE4, perhaps it would be good to make it an option. Not everyone likes the same stuff, so having options is good.

well, it's an available option right now, too. was just wondering about making it the default one, not the only one, in the future.

imho, this will simplify the understanding of the function of directories under *nixes for new users.

anyway, it was just an idea.

 Try this

This can already be done easily.

From your home directory run these commands:

mv Desktop Desktop_bak
ln -s . Desktop
killall kdesktop
kdesktop &

Now you will have your home directory as your desktop.

I think a better option might be to create links on your default desktop to the directories in home that you want access to. Or use the Universal sidebar. Personally, I'd like to have a Basket sidebar or even a Basket desktop. That would rock!

If you want to undo the commands above to restore your default desktop, do this from your home directory:

rm Desktop
mv Desktop_bak Desktop
killall kdesktop
kdesktop &
