 stuff

The modern thing isn't really my style, but its better than what we have now :)

I just think that KDE4 should be from start to end working transparantly through "daemons" and "widgets", daemons being the backend control servers of different tasks, for example for the K menu, and how the K menu will look like will be done by the widgets. Added functionalit should be provided as much as possible.
This means making an easy "plugin architecture"
This all sounds really hard and I doubt it that KDE4 will have it, but it's nice to think about..;

I also found a big usability problem in the classic mockup, I like the idea of showing icons there (most used applications), but what if: 2 programs have a same icon, or even worse, an application has no icon?

Welcome to Plasma! Plasma will be a merger of KDesktop, the Kicker, and SuperKaramba. Everything will be made up of Plasma applets including the replacement of Kicker (which will be a container applet, which has sub applets). Plasma will also have a model similar to the one you described, though it will have 3 parts instead of 2 (it will work pretty much the same as they way you described though, its on someones blog). http://plasma.kde.org is a good place to learn about plasma (for the most up to date information the blogs on http://planet.kde.org are the best sources).

Thanks for the information ;)
I know about Plasma.
I just don't know how EXACTLY Plasma will work.
I do like the way KDE4 is going though.
It seems like they really think about everything nowadays.
Plasma, Solid, Phonon, its all really nice stuff! :)

 Text in categories

by ibc on: Apr 12 2006

I like your idea, but miss the text of each category in the menu (Internet, Multimedia, Office...).

In my opinion it would be more easy for all the users if you add the text for these submenus in any good way. It's necessary.

Imagine a person who has never used KDE and open your menu. He won't know how to find the apps because he doesn't know the name of these category icons.

For First time KDErs, it can appear balloons with explanations to guide. Sometimes, image and text are spacious.

Do you really think it? I have realized that many of common users don't put the mouse over all the icons without text to understand the meaning of them. They simply do nothing.

Probably you (as me) when see an uknown icon then put the pointer over it, but the most of users don't want to investigate to use a simply menu that should be very easy and very very intuitive for them the first time.

 Tabs

I really like the tab aproach. But I imagine it will be hard to implement in a sane way (i.e. it won't be flexible, will have a hard time managing large meny systems, cannot handle multiple levels, etc.)

But, please, do continue evolving the tabs aproach. I really like it. Hopefully it can prove to be a great way.

Not only that, although it looks good. No, it looks really good, it wouldn't be an effective menu to use either. To make such a menu for a display computer, or in a school or something would probably be great, but I don't think I would use it partly because it doesn't seem like an effective way to do it.

whats wrong with simple menus? who need tabs/buttons lists or sth. like that in a menu?
what you propose would be hell usability wise...
just stick with single-pane menus!
