foreground layer for floating apps

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

for the desktop, we effectively have a background layer - but why not have a foreground layer as well?
if KDE4 provides some kind of integrated SuperKaramba functionality, this would be a perfect time to implement it.

in a conventional desktop, \'floating\' windows occupy the same space as normal windows, SK apps, pop-up displays etc. this can be irritating, when trying to manipulate windows \'under\' the floating apps.

a good solution to this issue, and a way to generally clean up the desktop is to introduce a foreground layer, which could be accessed through a modifier key, for example holding the \'windows\' key (I know I never use it...) would move the cursor into the foreground, allowing manipulation of the applications located there.

when not in the foreground layer, apps could become transparent, or disappear completely - it ought to be highly configurable.

I'm sorry to say I have no ideas as to how difficult this would be to implement.

with all the focus on Plasma\'s desktop being on floating applications and plugins, it could well make it far less confusing to think about implementing a solution similar to this.

sorry if this whole thing seems somewhat stilted, I\'m not really used to sharing ideas.

I don't have time to make a mock-up right now, but I feel the concept is a pretty simple one..

Well, it's only a mockup right?

heh, sorry, I just submitted a blank field.
I'll make a mock-up when I get home, but it's more of a mechanic than a visual thing.

 Excellent Idea

I can imagine this being extremely useful, the image I got while reading it was something like karamba widgets floating like a watermark in front of other windows, but not interfering with the mouse or usual usage of normal windows.

This idea has a lot of potential in terms of useability.

It reminds me of a useful variation of Dashboard for OSX.

could be useful, could be annoying, but as long as it's configurable enough can't be bad!

heh yeah a USEFUL version of the dashboard would be cool
