Description:

it's been 13 years now i work with a graphical desktop environment. i have today the same problems i had 13 years ago. there's no room.

i have found a decent way to work by getting rid of virtual screens, taskbars and the lot, by moving my menu bar to the top of the screen and by using alt-tab to swich between apps, but...

1) (re)think small
i need to take my laptop with me all the time. kde is the only reasonable desktop environment, but working with it on a 12" or 14" 1024x768 monitor is a nightmare. everything takes up too much room.

2) (re)think simple
my experience says that 90% of the people use at most 10% of the features anyway... in fact, i find myself more and more disabling features (animations, visual effects, sounds, you name it).

Changelog:

i know there's aren't any reals proposals in this post. i don't really have any. sorry.

cheers

the problem with these things is that its very hard to remove things nobody uses - everyone uses different things. I never use the zoom buttons in konqi, for example. I know ctrl-+ and ctrl-- will take care of zoom. But many ppl don't know that, and need/want them.

cleaning up is hard. If you have ideas, or are willing to help clean up dialogs and interfaces for KDE 4, i'm sure there are ways to contribute.

 Space economising

To inrease the place for what we realy use, and not menu etc...

I think that a simple think whould be to put the main menu ( here in konq I have Location Edit View Bookmarks Tools ... ) Into the window decoration -> about 20 pixels gained in horisontal space, thats "huge" enouth to be considered I think.

At least, an option should enable/disable it

 brainstorming, then

i see your point, superstoned.
it's not easy.

i did some casual thinking.
and since this is the brainstorm forum, i'll just brainstorm.

MVC (Model, View, Controller)
applications have similar needs. open, close, quit, next, previous, save, ...be it a text file, a piece of code, a song, a picture, ... applications allow access to these actions through toolbars. and every app has its own. what if MVC was exploited and a "desktop" toolbar was made available?

on startup, apps would register as listeners and would register their behaviour. this toolbar would then act on the active window/app.

this would save up a lot of space (and not only space) in each app and in the desktop as a whole.

possibly, other stuff may be implemented along the same line... list of open files, bookmarks, search boxes, ...

in my mind, this would be handy, 'cause the same action/feature/object is always in the same place, looks always the same way, ...

what do you reckon?

cheers!

I like that idea very much. It seems to me to be similar to the mac-style menu bar on top of the screen. I don't like windows being overcrowded with menus, tool bars etc. It should be with the tool bars as it already is with the menu bar: users choice, if he/she want's to have the icons within the windows and thereby repeated for every window or in some sidebar or something similar.

 For only about 60%

Not everybody has such a high resolution that small icons can be recognisable. Furthermore, older (50+) people don't like small items because of their eyes.

You would cut off about 40% of the users with that (assuming that KDE aims for all people)
