Description:

This script provides (after some little adaptions) a dynamic PNG which always shows the currently playing song. (now it also includes a script for KMail)

Therefore it's perfect for a signature.

Installation instruction are in the README file.

!!!you need a webserver with php >= 4.1 and gd1 or gd2 to use this script!!!
happily most free hoster offer this, so have not to set it up by your own :)

Changelog:

==0.7==
new version (edit by Adrian Heydecker)
..provides also a message if nothing is playing
fixed naming problem again (this time in the packing-script ;))

==0.6==
add script for KMail

==0.5.3==
increased the simpleness of installing

==0.5.2==
fixed problems at installation
works now also with newer amaroK versions

==0.5.1==
fixed a false expression

==0.5==
used german howto from http://www.active-4.com/files/amaroksig.html (with permissions) to build

But, woudl it be possible to host it on
a free image hosting server?

dunno, just try

but at most "free" hoster it should work, the server needs php and apache, this should be enough

Hi,
The Server must have php4.1 or higher and gd1 or gd2.
For most of the free hosters this is the base configuration.

 text/plain

Isn't text/plain ideal for e-mail signatures instead? There is no benefit I can think of by using PNG for this.

yup, but only for email! And cause you aren't the first who says this, I wrote a script for KMail. (version 0.6)

Ain't that TOO COMPLICATED for those of us who haven't ever tried to install Apache or GD libraries?
What if something's wrong with the configuration of the server and\or GD? What's then? You will advise reading through GD library's how-to or F.A.Q.?

That's good script, but anyway, a lot of users won't be able to use it.

Above that, the script itself requires too much of third party software. Perhaps, you could use some other technology to make it more selfdependent?

Thanks for your contribution, anyway :)

well, the script is like amaroK -- everything is 3rd party ;)

maybe I should say: "the most free hoster support this combination, so you havn't to set it up by your own"

but, you're right if you want to use it with your own machine it's a bit complicate

trying to use your script, no text is shown in the signature.png. trying signature_data, i see the current song.
i've done everything like in the HOWTO described - i guess - but nothing happens.
and i can't set signature_data to chmod 777, because it has been generated automatically.

any ideas?

hopefully it works, i think it's excellent (;

 what serverscript!!?

 by pxc on: Jun 20 2006

I have hosting on a webserver running Apache on Fedora 9, so I figured that maybe I could set this up. I decided to poke around and read the rewadmes, and the first inconsistency that I notice is that the server script tarball is called "server-script.tar.bz2" and not "server-script.tar.gz." Not a huge deal, but after I extract it and look around in the directory that it creates, there's no script!!
