Description:

Hy,

i have a idea again ;)
but, i have forgot a buttor for
root. but, i think, why not a rpm/deb kio for reading the rpm-dbase, and deinstall packages, with other program
can we are install other packets and therewith we can see what we have installed..and can deinstall ;)
And why not a rpm/deb manager -in-
KDE.. it is on time..

regards
Blacky

hmmm.... I think that programs installing packages should be provided by the distribution, not KDE itself (of course, the 3rd party app could have a KIOslave). Making this a part of KDE will:

  1. Introduce new dependencies (especially for non-RPM and non-DEB based distros)

  2. Make no sense to the users of distros like Gentoo, SLackware and Arch (they don't use RPMs or DEBs)

  3. Won't be able to use online repositories properly (because they are dealt very differently in different distros)

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

very true. rpm's and deb's are popular but are only two out of very many possibilities. kde's supposed to run on many things, not even only linux, so - not counting lots of linux distros - how about bsd, darwin and the like?

well, so we do, very true. but i certainly don't think it's good. imho, if package management is distro-specific, package managers should be that, too.

actually, i think there's sth weird about the way people think about kde. kde is a great desktop manager.
installing packages, printing, finding new devices connected, creating office software and the like are all tasks beyond desktop management and i really can't see why people want to have it all bundled into one monolith thing. are we going windows or what?

Hy,

good idea, yes, why not more as one/two kio's for other Distrie's , my idea is, kio's for install dbase's and kio's not so big, but good as addon for rpm,deb and other install dbase's.. and i think it's give ammy programmers who whant wrote a kio, but isnt a good instructions on the way for make a kio, otherwise it's give more kio's for kde
as plugin.. shold be give a folder were store the manny kio's for kde to wrote more kio's for uploading in kde-apps :)
as one-file-app.. : search.kio / rpm.kio / deb.kio / rpmdb.kio / debdb.kio and so...

regards
Blacky

I'm really not sure how usefull this would be for a package database. However it could prove usefull if it were just a kioslave to be able to browse within an rpm or deb file. Like you can with a tar file. I actually came accross this while looking for a kioslave for cpio because I'm trying to open an rpm while rpm is compiling.

...how about forking konqueror and making it a desktop environment? I don't really think file manager should install programs.

right! file manager is for managing files.
just as much as desktop manager is for managing desktop, and not all things computer.
kde is going so much everything that i just keep waiting to find a kernel in it, too.

Actually, I've seen people who thought KDE was an OS. I've also seen an old article where the poster said that Xfree was hard to install and configure, so it was better to install KDE.

exactly. i mean, it'd be just fine to have a kde distro but i still would like to be able to install it on some other one, too. and i would be really so happy if i could only install what i want to, not the entire blocks, etc.

I aggree that it could be nice if there were a way to easily instal any KDE stuff using a KDE tool.

But it would only be for KDE things, not other packages.

(I've been trying to instal Koffice for 3 days now, and I didn't manage yet ...)
