iP3300

I was quite frustrated, when I saw how complex it is to install the drivers for a Canon Pixma printer. So I started building a shell script from the single steps of the wiki article of Ubuntuusers which does the whole work for me.
This script works only for Pixma iP3300 and not for similar printers or printers identical in construction (even not the iP3500!).

The current version (1.0/working title ‘iP3300.sh’) includes the following features:
- multilingual: German or English part is loaded depending on system language
- fetching iP3300 driver
- installing alien package converter and dependencies
- converting drivers with alien
- setting the needed symlinks
- fetching and installing preconfigured cups ppd-file

This version was tested with Ubuntu 7.xx, Sidux and Debian (all x86) and worked. I tried it under Ubuntu 7.10 64bit and nuked the whole system, so I advice you strongly not to use it under any 64bitted system!
Currently I’m working on a version which supports more, different Pixma-printers.

How to use
1. Download and uncompress the .tar.gz-file
$ tar -xzf iP3300.tar.gz

2. Change to the new directory
$ cd iP3300

3. Execute the script (as root or via sudo)
# ./iP3300.sh

4. Plug in your printer and configure it using the newly installed driver.
