i wish you and your patience best luck with the set. just remember that it is one hell of a piece of work to complete an icon set. at this moment, i'm counting 692 icons for lila-kde, and it still can't claim completeness.

on the other hand, not all the icons have to be unique, and if they fit into the standard icon set then yours doesn't necessarily have to be complete.

if you really aim for completeness, do everything you can to gather other people around you joining the creation of the set.

Individually, they're very nice, but as a set shouldn't they all be from the same perspective and shouldn't the shadow be cast in the same direction on all?

It seems some are seen from the front while others are from the top left. The wine shadow is cast back and left while the others are mostly from the top and forward.

Of course, it's easy to be a critic; so I just want to say that I do like them.

 I don't get it...

Would Dell sell you a computer with no motherboard, hard drive and RAM?

Would McDonald's sell you just 1/4 of a Big Mac?

Would a grocer only sell cereal in boxes that are 1/10 full?

Would BMW sell you a new car with no steering wheel, engine and tires?

Would Lufthansa sell you a seat on a plane that's being refurbished and is missing fabric on the seats and carpet on the floor?

Did Leonardo de Vinci offer the "Mona Lisa" to the world unfinished, without a face?

Did the latest version of SuSE come with no Linux kernel?

Does Logitech sell keyboards with the letters l, e, w, o, p, r & s missing?
Do they sell webcams without lenses?

Does Rolex sell watches with no hands or wristband?

The answer to all of these of course is, "no, they don't".

They don't offer their product until it's ready or finished.

So why do you?

We can wait. We didn't even need to know you were working it (until it was done).

I just don't get why so many artists on this site offer up unfinished work. Work they flat out admit is unfinished.

What's the point? It seems rather sloppy to me.

I'm no artist, but if I were, I'd see no reason to offer my work to the public until it was finished.

I guess I'm weird like that...

a) People can take the unfinished work as a "template" and and extend it. This is called contributing and one of the principles of Open Source. (Maybe you heard the paradigm "Release often, release early" somewhen?) This is also how to build communities - you don't need them no more if your creation is already done, but they can help a lot getting there.

b) People who don't want to contribute, but find it useful for their own work, can merge it. There are several "combined icon sets" out there.

c) Many good pieces of work would never get published, because they don't get finished. I think that would be a pity.

d) As long as it doesn't make false promises, why should the artist not publish the icons? Even a small number of 8 icons is quite some work and should be appreciated - and you don't have to download them, right?

Another alternative reason than the good ones already mentioned would be that before the artist sinks the significant amount of needed time into building the whole icon set, he/she is presenting them incomplete to see what people think, if there are suggestions, likes or dislikes and just general feedback.
You list examples of things never provided unfinished but I will just reply to the first instead of all of them. Do you think inside the company Dell, that one single person puts together the machine from thought till finish ? Or does someone make suggestions, then a market analyst tests the configuration against market demands and expected revenue, adjustsments are made, and finally, if the machine is deemed financially sound, it is built and released.
That will apply to all your examples, and it applies to these icons.
If everyone was writing in saying the icons were ugly as sin, perhaps the artist wouldn't spend the time to continue them ? However the feedback seems generally positive for them so the artist now has more motivation I am sure to continue and eventually finish the set, if such a thing could ever be done.
