Description:

I think that in many cases KDE have just too many options in it\'s application, but at the same time, as a semi advanced user, I refuse to give any of them away. A great way to get both is having sort of a \"about:config\" option in every application. Then we can have the best of both worlds :-)

Since most applications don\'t have a address bar to access \\\\\\\"about:config\\\\\\\" in the same way as in Firefox, it could be a entry in the menu, or a \\\\\\\"Don\\\\\\\'t push this button if you don\\\\\\\'t know what you are doing!\\\\\\\" button in the programs in the config dialog.

I think this approach is a great way of having all the options, without clustering menus and dialogs.

So basically you opt for simple options, and more complex options for more advanced users.

At first I was against.. but then again... I can imagine this working great. I'll vote positive!

Your idea got me thinking (OMG, it's a miracle!): Let's make an extra app that can edit all those nifty xml-files with settings in the ~/.kde dir. It would be easy to start it from the menu of any app, but we could run it anyways. Just like the control centre already is implemented.

Isn't this what someone else has already done?
The idea was (I don't remember the link on KDE-look) to make something like in the xine-ui config dialog, where you can choose between beginner, advanced, expert, master of knowledge. It could be made in Tabs or in a dialog popping up before starting...
Anyway, your idea is good, but it may need some more details and fine-tuning.

this is a different idea. having several tabs and hundreds of options will often be a mess. having "about:config" will give more option and is in my mind a better way to do it. Having advanced tabs can still be used...

How about any config screens having a Simple/Advanced options button.

The config screen starts off in Simple mode, with "Advanced options" button sitting beside the "Save/cancel" buttons.

User clicks the button and gets an advanced version of the config window, the button now changes to "Simple options".

It's simple, intuitive and clean... and I believe tried and tested and familiar to most users.

Stage 1 Gentoo Linux user :)
