a few ideas for kde 4

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 50%
Downloads:  60
Submitted:  Mar 9 2006

Description:

A few things :

- While I don\\\\\\\'t know if the kicker will remain the same in kde 4.0, I believe that would be great to have full separate control over every panel. Right now, it is not possible to enable transparency for the main panel and use a plain color for another panel. Just an idea.

- All panel icons should be customizable by the user. Right now, some of them are \\\\\\\'locked\\\\\\\' and the only way to change them is to modify the icon theme by hand.

- Something I\\\\\\\'ve been bitching about for a long time : windecos and themes should be something more simple like maybe description files (maybe xml or whatever), pictures, maybe some folders with a defined structure. Right now, it\\\\\\\'s all about source which have to be compiled using this or that precise compiler with some libs and for all users using distro A or B or Z it\\\\\\\'s virtually impossible to access all windecos and themes or sometimes just a precise windeco because it\\\\\\\'s just not available for distro X. Plus the way windeco and themes are designed doesn\\\\\\\'t allow much a newbie to build his/her own stuff. Not mentioning the docs not really easy to find and use. DeKorator is something going in that direction even if it\\\\\\\'s still quite new and has to improve.

- KDE should also integrate some way to adjust dpi, interacting with xorg, for better quality display. Right now that is something lacking badly and most people I know installing KDE have bad or misconfigured dpi settings and they are not happy at all with the way their desktop looks. Since KDE is the desktop that is something they should take care, working with xorg. First impressions are important and the first look at a kde desktop is rarely satisfying from a \\\\\\\'font\\\\\\\' point of view. Maybe KDE should carefully choose some open source fonts for its desktop I guess that would help too. Right now the fonts are a huge mess among the distros on Linux...

Well that\\\\\\\'s it for now. May add more later.

1. and 2. Kicker will be dead nad burried in 4.0, replaced by plasma panels. These will be more customizeable tnan kicker.

3. If there are packages for major distros, installing new themes is very easy. Anyway, making themes just some dirs with files would make these themes less advanced, and some pretty things wouldn't be possible (not to mention worse performance).

4. This mostly depends on the distro. IMHO, KDE shouldn't do too much "low-level" work, like setting up Xorg.conf. But yes, the default KDE fonts that are used in KDE aren't too good.

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

i agree that it would be nice to be able to apply transparency to one bar without affecting the others.

[...]have full separate control over every panel.[...]
It's there. In the context menu of every unlocked kicker panel there is an option "Configure ".
I do however agree that it should be extended to the "Appearance" group of settings: right now the separation is only in the "Hiding" and "Arrangement" (and also you can exclude the menubar panel from the transparency).
All panel icons should be customizable by the user.
I agree.
windecos should be more simple
They already are, check out deKorator (available on KDE-Look). However, the classic windeco coding approach isn't going away, since it gives flexibility.
themes should be more simple
bitwit (a KDE-Look user) is working on it.
