 Good idea

I believe that your idea is good one, but I doubt that KDE will release official taskbar because it is a clear ripoff from win7.
On the other hand MS has often copied solutions from mac and linux world, without shame..
But never the less there might be some freelancer kde programmer that will find time to put this idea in to reality.

I believe that we should differentiate ideas as being good or bad, source of the idea should not play any role.

I personally hope to see more win7 features on linux and kde soon :)

Yeah! MS even copied the minimize animation from KDE4. Anyway i was using Win7 Beta, and i have to say that the new taskbar is really useful and keeps the desktop clean and nice. Plasma Devs should just copy somthing from MS that one time :D Hope to see that taskbar come true.

 Hmm...

Just some things to think about. I find the Win7 Taskbar very useful, but I don't think it should just be directly copied. Since it has to be made from scratch, are there any improvements that can be made to give it a more KDE flavour?

*****************
What about launching a new instance? In win7, after a first instance is launched, you have to go into a menu to launch another. Is there an alternative, move elegant solution?

How do multiple desktops factor in? One thing that linux has that windows doesn't is multiple desktops. Is there any way of taking advantage of this and/or making it more powerful?

Custom groupings? Is there a non-disruptive way of allowing custom groupings? How would this be implemented? Are custom groupings rendered unnecessary by multiple desktops?

How does this behave on the desktop? Plasmoids can be on the desktop or in the panel.

Background applications? Sometimes you want something running, but you don't want it on your taskbar, or at least not in the same place (and perhaps smaller, or hidden in a popup). Would there be a way of doing this easily (I'm thinking along the lines of the Win7 systray hiding, but maybe there's something better)

Do runners have any application here? Runners provide task oriented features. Could these features be useful in a taskbar?

Almost forgot! KDE has Exposé. Could this be included somehow?

Just throwing stuff out there. The last thing we need is an overly bloated task switcher. But there might be simple, elegant ways of incorporating some, if not all, of these features.

There was a post here about consolidating the systray with the taskbar. Would this be possible? I personally don't like the idea of systray icons mixed with my tasks, but maybe there is a way of unifying the architecture and then offering different places of displaying the information, making the system more flexible.

For example, Pidgin has a notification icon. If the you have a conversation open, then when Pidgin tries to notify you of a new message, it would be forwarded to the task icon.

Also, a lot of systray items work like the background applications mentioned earlier, so, the two could be handled similarly.

I don't know enough about the way the systray works to know if any of this is even possible.

I think that there is too many apps using systray, so it should stay. But should be rewrite. I was reading somewhere that the current systray protocol is dead, but i don't know exactly what's going on. Maybe they will write a new one? The idea here is to make task without text (app names nad titles) with a notification area and default gruping. F.e all current opened Dolphin windows are gruped in one launcher icon.

Yeah, the systray is beyond the scope of this. There's has been some talk about unifying the icon, and anytime a new paradigm is introduced, it offers an opportunity to make way for a more consistent structure. No point wasting time on a pipe dream with unproven returns, though.

Anyways, the I understand simplicity is important, however, functionality can be introduced without making (too much) clutter. For example, the icon has several distinct inputs. Some example mappings would be:

Hover: Popup
Left-Click: Popup / Select-only-window
Right-Click: Context Menu - possibly enhanced by runners
Double-Click: all windows or most-recent window
Press & Hold: Exposé (harder to find)
Middle-Click: New instance, windows-from-all-desktops, move-icon, or mimick left-click (harder to find)
Scroll: ? (easy to do unintentionally)

There is also the (unlikely) possibility of the popup having an extender handle, which could offer some streamlined features, though this probably wouldn't outweigh the extra feeling of clutter it would add to the popup. It probably shouldn't have one...

If you really want to keep your UI uber clean, then you probably don't want most of this, but you were asking for other ideas so... yeah

None by the moment

You don't have to go to the menu to launch a new instance...

You just click while holding shift ;-)

Yay, thanx! Thumbs down for discoverability though... maybe the menu item should say something like (Shift+Click)...

the good idea of the new windows 7 dock is the recent documents list by application on click right (i think).it could be very usefull to have this functionality for a launcher/dock with favorite applications without opening applications.
we can also ad a panel (sort of start menu) with recently launched/most used apps .
this tabs multi preview is a god ideabecause preview are small and horizontal not vertical users cans see the desktop

I think menus should be left to menu projects (like raptor) :P

Recent documents could be provided by the already established Recent Document runners (just tested it with a recent file of mine and it worked) Though there doesn't seem to be enough of these...

Question: if apps are being shown by desktop, and a pinned app is running, but on another desktop, what should happen?

If the 'show only from current desktop' option is diabled it should appear on the taskbar. But if it is enabled it will not appear on the taskbar, when it's on the other desktop. Like normal.

 Better no direct copy...

... of the Win7 taskbar - that would give just flames.

But one could get at least the possibility to have only icons by adding a customization option to the taskbar plasmoid: In many programs you can decide whether your controls are icons, icons and text (below, above, to the right) or text only. I have no idea about programming, but in this simple form it seems to be not to difficult to implement.

And another thing: As you have a pop up for the icons on the desktop (size, rotation, setting, remove) one could add a similar bar (close, restore, open another instance of the program or the like) to the taskbar which pops up when you hover over the little preview window.

In both cases you would get additional customization (one of the biggest ++ of KDE) an (partly win-like) functionality just by the consequent use of KDE/plasma principles.

Just my 2¢.
