KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 58%

Submitted:  Mar 18 2006

Description:

Hello, this is just a quick one:
I\'d be cool, if Konqueror (or KDE as a whole) could use Unix-commandos just like the bash does.
For example I\'d be then be possible to rename a file myfile_`date +%d.%m.%y` and Konqueror resolves that as (today) myfile_18.03.06.

 Bad, bad, bad

May your command line idea go to /dev/null

..."KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or Microsoft Windows."

I have no judgement on whether you should use the CLI in a gui interface but why would you even want to remotely possibly expose such complexity to john public user?

This kind of feature wouldn't make KDE any harder to use, since it would only be "visible" to more advanced users. I personally think it would make a great feature.

The only way to make GUI more usable for power users is to give them power. They would otherwise keep to their terminals and miss the power UIs can give.

"Simpler" users don't need to suffer from this idea.

It is about time to bridge both worlds together. CLI users also deserve some usability.

Nadim.

As long as this kind of expressions (that is, common ones) can be generated by an UI and as long as the feature is buried deep so as to not scare the newbs, I'm all for it.

That's a good point of view. I see the problem. KDE should use always the -i flag then. So a rm -rf becomes automatically rm -rf -i

what would make the whole thing really slow - are you aware of the fact that you can bind in a konsole into the konqueror widow that will follow the current path?
(Window->"show terminal emulator")

Yes, I know that feature.
BTW: I've just thought a bit longer about that idea with the Nude Chicks-Link, and I dont think that would work. Why should it work? It is not an User-Input but only a Link and if Konqueror trys to go to that link he'd only say: Error, no such file or directory.

damnit, i dont know how to escape those out, you know what i mean.

For everyone who's to lazy to try it out, Konqueror says: couldn't find that freaking thing ;)

(I use german-lanuage-pack, so the actuall message is: "Beim Laden von file:///home/user_name/echo test > $HOME/testfile ist folgender Fehler aufgetreten:
Die Datei oder der Ordner /home/stefan/echo test > $HOME/testfile existiert nicht."
