The KDE easy file sharing app...

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

Well, we all know the easy file sharing applet from kde. I think its a good app, but i think it could be even better :)

Some points:

-What about displaying the icon in the systray instead of the kicker-icon it uses now? I think the icon and behaviour it has is very annoying and not very standard, and the systray would be almost perfect for such an app...

-What about more protocols, maybe ftp or even samba as optional protocols which will be choosen when creating a share? I dont want to have this as a p2p app or something, but i think ftp amd samba are mucho better and more useable than http and the applet would be used by more people. And at least there would be only one app to control/monitor etc the shares instead of multiple apps...

-Maybe some more options like configurable users/directories for ftp... Well i am waiting for years now for a simple, easy to use app just to share some files with friends on every platform... Just a small, minimal ftp server for the desktop, because most of the time configuring a full fledged ftp server is just too much...

-It should be very minimal, that means read-only shares for ftp, this would also decrease security flaws... Well, it should be NO fully fedged ftp server, but just only an app to share some files with friends the fast and easy way...

And at least the things i mostly don`t like about this app in its current state:

-The icon and its behaviour is simply awful, it really should go into systray...

-When downloading multiple files from a friend, i always have to klick them all one by one, because its only this small http server...

Just some ideas, feel free to comment/like/dislike/flame, i appreciate it :)

If i would be a programmer, i would have send some patches already... ;)

Yes, and my english is horrible ;)

 Isn't an application

Mostly i agree with your sentiment. In the sense that it has limited functionality, it is nice to have something quick and easy to do simple sharing. I guess if you added all those features it wouldnt be so easy any more, although good design should keep it just as straight-forward.

I kinda like having a nice big icon showing me its running tho. Probably being not the most secure app to have going all the time, seeing it there reminds me to shut it down when I dont need it.

Perhaps a proper application should be deveoped instead to tie in your ideas?

I tried to contact the developer but never received an answer...at one time my website was in the position to fund a few improvements, but the fat days are long gone...LOL

What would it take to incorporate upload capabilities? I realize it probably is alot since it seems natural it should be that way. Something along the line of www file share pro in winbloz. LOL, I have those little blue globes lined up in my panel and all working most of the time.
