Description:

This is a very simple idea. When you place the cursor over a file, it will show the icon of the application is will use to run the file. If your going to play an avi it will have the icon for kaffine, xine, totem, mplayer, vlc, whatever over it. If it's an executable it will show a terminal icon, or something along those lines. If it's a file the konqueror open use then it won't show anything, Such as folders, text files.

 Better popup

Better this icon is shown in the popup - it won't distract and confuse new users as much.

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

I was planning on it softly fading in. I think it won't take a person long to figure out what it means. =)

I just thought it would be a good idea, becuase I went to click on a .mov, and mplayer (that I broke, and forgot to remove) tried to run the .mov, it crashed of course.

That's why I came up with this idea. Also it would help me when I work on other peoples Linux boxes, if I knew what KDE was going to try and run with a file.

Never give up a good idea because it will confuse new users. Tempory confusion is worth it for a long term improvement.

But I think it needs a few adjusts.
What about placing the icon next to cursor, like when you place the mouse cursor over a email link on a web page?

I like it. Would be better I think if the icon was about 1/2 size and did fade in though. I like that it is transparent, I wouldn't do it full opacity.

 A little too fancy

This seems a bit over the top to me. Those with ancient systems aren't going to be too pleased with all this fading and transparency.

Really, I think a much simpler and realistic alternative would be to insert a line into the default tooltip. For example:

Name: sample.jpg
Type: JPEG image
Opens with: Gwenview
Size: 50.5kB
Modified: 2006-03-29 02:07:34
etc.

Do both the tooltip and the icon, then users who's ancient machines can't do the icon simply turn it off.
