Overlapping and Tiled Window Management

This mock-up shows some ideas on how tiled and overlapping window management could be combined. In the first mock-up, the desktop is similar to a classic desktop. In the second, the desktop is split into \"sub-desktops\" in a way similar to Blender\'s interface. Program icons could be dragged into an empty space to fill it, and if two or more are dragged into the same sub-desktop then normal windows will appear which can be used like a mini standard desktop. If you want a particular sub-desktop to fill the screen, you would simply click the button in the upper left-hand corner.

The mock-up does not address window switchers or how an application\'s icon could be dragged into a sub-desktop, but I think that solutions to these problems can be worked out.

The main advantage of this idea is that you can do anything that you want, instantly. The downside is that the many features may just create unnecessary complication. However, you would only have to use the advanced features if you wanted to, otherwise everything would behave normally.

If you are wondering what the advantage of tiled windows is, mostly it is that you can see everything at once, and change it quickly, without the amount of manual resizing required with overlapping window managers.
