New "KDE" Layout

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 74%

Submitted:  Aug 10 2006

Description:

I was thinking about that kde wizard the other day. You know... that one that pops up sometimes when you install a distro and asks you weather you want your DE set up like windows, mac, or unix?

Well i prepose that we take this one step further.

When a user selects the "Mac" layout, kde mimics apple osx as much as possiable. With the bar at the top of the screen and so on.

When a user selects "Windows" kde takes on the form of the defalt looking windows.

However, the big change is when the user selects KDE.
KDE NEEDS ITS OWN UNIQUE LAYOUT.

I'm not making suggestions on the looks of this layout, but it is essential in kde 4. Think, Windows has its own standerd layout, and so does Mac. Gnome even has its own layout, its similar to OSX, but not the same.

KDE Needs it own different layout, this way it will be much more of its own DE

GnoMenu - Documentatio n Manager

KDE clearly has the ability to be more unique, and intuitive. Staying with the current Win95 like system is pointless really. I think something like TastyMenu should be considered in the Kicker rewrite. I think some hidden options could help as well. Would love to see a hidable sidebar that can display system status and other information (something simular to gkrellm but designed for KDE and with built in intergration.)

 mimic wizard?

this stupid wizard should be removed, and kde must have its own new, creative, original look.
if kde will look like windows or mac, why should people use it? it is the same. kde can be much more elegant and attractive then windows, and even mac.

Agreed, although there are many things I personally prefer to be like Windows (small taskbar, double clicking folders etc) these are small changes to the UI and OK. But if we do see a big change in KDE it better be the standard- think about the scenario on Linux Questions if you have a group of people who run the OS like OSX, an entire group like Windows and a group with something different again.

It's a nice idea to be as hospitable as possible and I would like to see it but the practical aspects of this make it unneeded, it would over complicate rather than simplify a lot of the transition.

e.g. I am looking for an answer on LQ and I find this:

"Go the the Start Menu area, under control panel go to networking section....."

My first thought as a user of one of the other two solutions would be "the where, the what?"

Changes to the DE should probably be limited to minor changes.

 Inspiration

GnoMenu - Documentatio n Manager

My 2 year old gave me some inspiration on a possible idea. He has recently started doing, on his own, jigsaw puzzles. Now the inspiration from this is why not create a modulure system that allows users to select features like how the menu is displayed by slecting various components that can be mixed and matched. Same can be done for other kicker components.

Side bar and top bar options can also be used in same fashion. This way KDE can be completely customizable with minimum hassle. Think in terms of a set of building block.

Each block represents a certain function and/or feature. Not only can users seolect the blocks they want to you use but how they are placed as well.

Also each block has its own set of customizable features (sub-blocks if you will) that can further allow a end user to customize the look and feel of their GUI.

Base KDE installs will of course ship with a particular block arrangement, but this allows more options and choices for the end user.

Just a thought.

the very thing that keeps me inspired to use the K DE is...

it can look like anything you want ! from familiar to completely alien.

its about choices isnt it ?

what do you want your DE to look like today ?

 One extra idea.

There is always problem with new users about KDE UI and other settings. I suggest that we use on KDE4 this wizard thing to help users to learn where he finds Kcontrol or where is s/he's filemanager, internet browser or email software etc.

It just could be 4-5 pages fullscreen or 80% of screen so good screenshots can be added or even we could use flash as animation to show users where to find things to get started. Like Windows XP did have this started animation, i liked that idea, but not after that when i couldn't find way to stop that. Thats why i preferred HTML version of it.

But my point just is that there should be added sample UI wizard to start so we dont need to take that Gnome style "users are stupid" to make everything so simple that using those things isn't easy enymore.

KDE it just must be...
