what are you doing running as root and why not use Mandrake or something? You have a nice looking desktop but many things defy explanation.

 Mandrake?

You asked why I dont just use mandrake? I used to use Mandrake 8.2 and because its based on Redhat its a pain in the arse to get anythink install urpmi sucks and never works to install 1 program in rpm you need to send 4 hours finding all the other files it needs to make it work. Lindows you can download the source if you want and compile it or just go in the Click-N-Run warehouse and they have loads of programs and to install it all you have to do it "Click-N-It Runs" no stupid problems with downloading loads of other programs. As for the fact about Lindows running as root this is by choise I could run as a normall user but I dont like doing it, its to much of a pain in the arse having to type a password in everytime I want to change a file or install somethink. I like Lindows as it is just Linux with Wine but its made easy thats why I use it, and im not saying its for everyone but my friends who have run stuff like mandrake, redhat, lycoris and love my Lindows system for how easy everythink is to do (I.e. the latest release automaticly sets up OpenGL support with Nvidia cards) not installing mandrake then downloading nvidia drivers and changed config files :)

why do you use linux? you dont seem to be aware of using linux as root, and you try to have a OS that is so near to windows as possible... why don't you simply use windows??? (==> its much easier to install programs )

and i dont have to search for hours looking for other programs (libaries? you mean?) just so i can install what i want.

i use gentoo and its as easy as

emerge kde

in the console.

and it will get everysingle package i need and compile it in the right order even if i dont have X it gets it.

same with everything else.

and im always running the latest bleeding edge software.

updating is as easy as

emerge -u system && emerge -u world

 Power to Lindows!

Don't listen to 'em, MadMunky.

They haven't used Lindows, so they can't judge how good it is.

Only you and me and the other insiders know how good Lindows is.

Your desktop looks great, and this should be the topic here and not Lindows. You guys are evil for giving him score based on his distro and not based on prettiness.

Ok Ok coming from one who has used lindows i dont think its all that great, i mean sure, you can run windows apps easily. But thats why we have Wine and WineX i havnt seen anything running in lindows that i cant get working in wine/X.

as for the way the desk looks, IMHO it isnt all that great and certainly no better than KDE (IT IS KDE!) in my short usage of Lindows i didnt get to tinker with it very much but from what i saw the certain mods to KDE cant be chenged back (or fixed if you prefer that term)

In any case I love my SlackWare and think that lindows isnt all that special......

again My opinion.

 Running as root

by JPriest on: Aug 22 2002

Bash on Lindows all you want, but I really don't see the problem with running as root. I don't use Lindows or run as root, but the second I cannot do/install something without being root, the first thing I do is su to root and do it anyway. So from this scenario, remove my constantly having to su to root, and what you have left, is Lindows. I also run XP with an administrative account. I don’t need or want anyone to hold my hand, sorry.

I think you got a pretty sexy =)
I haven't tried Lindows yet. However, I
really hope that by the end of this year they will have something
really great availeable. RIght now the main highlights
is that easy Click-N-RUn thing, no longer is WIne the focus. I don't think running as root is a goog thing. PEople don't SU allday. Some of us do work n it and once we have the applications we want installed we won't need anymore suing :).
