Description:

This is my idea of a new Konqueror in KDE4.

The desing is based in this mockup:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=28476
made by eriol:
http://www.kde-look.org/usermanager/search.php?username=eriol

I have done an HTML&JavaScript preview of the mockup. You can see it by clicking in "Homepage" or "download" section.

The explanation of this mockup is in "download" section too.

TODO:

- Make a preview of a splitted window to see how it looks.
- Make a preview of the audio collection (like amaroK, should be the same).
- Show the files containing in the TAR file in the right "info" column instead of the big icon.

More ideas? changes? improvements?

Changelog:

VERSION 1.1:

- Added a "Clear location" and "Go" buttons in the location bar.
- The float menu is vertical instead of horizontal.
- The "Up" button appears in web browser mode too.
- The "Refresh" and "Stop" buttons are the same: when the page or document finishes loading the "Stop" button becomes into "Refresh" button (the same behaviour as Opera, that works perfectly).
- Added a "my Home" button in the specific bar in file browse mode.

VERSION 1.0:

- Initial release.

 suggestions

the menu button is a wonderful idea! I would suggest making the menu horizontal across the title bar of the window so that users can get the standard "File Edit View" menu that every other operating system uses. Also, I would include the movement options (the options that become available when you press Alt-Space) as the first menu item (since I dont see in your mockup where this set of options would go to.

edit: just saw your changelog, but I still think that a horizontal menu would be better since it offers a sense of familiarity to other operating systems.

In the first version of this mockup I used an hotizantal menu, and realized that it was inusable:

Imagine the user wants to click in the "Help" submenu. With a pop-up horizontal menu the user should do:
1) Go to left-top corner and click in "Menu" button.
2) Go to right and press "Help" option.

So because of if, I think is much better to show the pop-up menu-vertically.

PD: Have you tried to press the "Lock menu" option in the menu? then you'll see the static menu horizonal as you suggest.

The page http://konqueror4.linuxdevel.net/ seems to be down, at least it doesn't lead to the interactive konqueror mockup anymore. Is there anywhere we can find it again?
Coding takes a long time, we need good ideas to stay around for many years until they can get implemented :-)

It looks nice, but wouldn't the users miss the directory trees?

I find them quite convenient when browsing a remote directory in the main icon view, and wanting to copy a file to ~/Documents/foobar/ for instance - I can just drag into the sidebar folder.
But if the sidebar is just a collection of "links", then they cannot be used as browsable destinations anymore.
