Description:

KScriptPanel is a tool for managing Kommander scripts. It shows all kmdr scripts from a given directory and the user can choose between several options like open with kmdr-editor, execute or open with kdesu.
There are some helping applications for kmdr-script developers included too.
- Klinco (Collection of Kommander related weblinks)
- Komaire (A mailinglist reader for the Kommander mailinglist)
- KSetupMaker (Tool for creating a installer for Kommander scripts)
- SCshot (Screenshot maker)
- Widget Reference (A reference for the Kommander widgets)

Hi Sascha,

KScriptPanel is really really great. It's up and running without any issues here on Debian/Sid.
I love several functionality as for example Komaire and Klinco. But I wonder, will there ever be an option to download Kommander scripts directly via your GUI from kde-apps.org or any source. I mean something like apt-get as you may guess (which would obviously would include something like an update option, categories (Multimedia, System, ...).

Anyway, congratulations for this tool. Keep up your excellent work.

KScriptPanel has a simple download function for kmdr scripts - just activate the download radio button and enter the url to the kmdr script. But I guess you mean an overview of the available scripts on kde-apps...
I have plans for such an application, but I am not sure how to realize it. Show all kmdr scripts from kde-apps or just a assortment of them!? I would prefer the second way - taking the best scripts from kde-apps and post them on my homepage (one day it will get an update *g*). You have ideas what such a programm needs? Let me know!

I'm aware of this but found it a bit tricky to enter the URL in advance. Would there be a benefit in contrast from downloading it directly?

As you say, I think an external download page is the way to go. One which offers other developers a protocol for submitting their tools (obviously these devs should know about this place).You could ask the Kommader devs for input how to achieve this or even try to get access to http://kommander.kdewebdev.org/. Another common way to go might be sourceforge or berlios I think.

I agree here. Some of the scripts are no longer maintained, bare usefulness or even are offered as rpm or deb. A big plus is that you could give the scripts an own version system which might your "update engine"-design. Moreover I think it might be very hard for a single person to keep track on all apps.

Well, how to start. From the users side you would need:

* an overview of apps (best with categories)
* a central folder were to download the scripts (something like: ~/.kmdr-apps/...)
* an automatic way to unpack the scripts
* a list of console apps which must be existent on the users system (Obviously for every single Kommander script (sounds hard))
* an automatic way to set them up
* an update system (comparison of "your" version numbers might ease this) which deletes old files. This should be done manual.
But here one has to take care if a user made changes to a script which means to compare the old version with the "original old" version. If no change was done proceed with the new version
* automatic clean-up after successful set up
* a way to remove no longer needed tools (at least as a user I would expect to have such a functionality)

* please check the "Show examples" button. I think it's not working for me (ends in an blank Konqueror page)
* Consider to separate the "action" radio buttons in two sections:
1) run (which either run the apps as user or kdesu)
2) edit (everything done from kmdr-editor, ..., download)
For the later one I would suggest to implement this in another tab
* can you think of a way to integrate KScriptPanel automatically into KDE (Though I do not use it here seems to be somebody who achieved it: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Kapt'n+Sidux?content=58809)
* is there a way to assign a default start option to every single Kommander script? I'm asking because some scripts need root privileges others do not. I guess you know what I mean.

many thanks for your help.
OK, lets start with the "Show Examples" problem. I am using Kubuntu, and the exapmles are saved in /usr/share/doc/kommander/examples. The command for the "Show Examples" button is 'locate -n 1 kommander/examples' and it will only give an output if locate finds a directory structure kommander/examples. Maybe your examples directory is saved somewhere else. Please let me know where your examples are stored, so that I can fix this error.
You are right about the gui design. This is a problem too. KScriptPanel grew up with the time. I added new functions at the moment when I discovered that I need such a function. The gui will be changed, when all usefull options are insert.
It seems that you have a lot of good ideas, and as you mentioned would it be hard for a single person to manage a kommander script collection. In my summer holiday (4 weeks *YEAH*), I want to rent a vserver (seems to be enough for such a small project) for hosting the kommander-fanpage . Maybe you want to help me with building up a Kommander script page :).

The problem can be solved in DebSid by changing the option of the "locate".
Replace "-n 1" option with "--limit=1".
I spouse it work in all deb distro based.
I suggest those scripts to be the first listed in the scripts list.
In rest is an very useful script for me especially the tool which make installers.
You have make an really great work!
