Description:

This is my idea about the new menu and desktop in KDE4:

1)

I don't like the typical vertical menu that Windows or actual KDE use, it's difficult to use with a laptop or just with the mouse, and it's always small. Why not try to innovate with a better accessibility for all the users? I suggest to use horizontal menus using the 100% width of the screen, why not? so we can see big icons easy to press into them.

2)

Gnome uses 3 menu buttons in the top panel: "Applications", "Places" and "System". I think this concept is right, but it uses too much space in the panel so Gnome needs to have another panel in the botton of the screen for the open apps. KDE users don't like it, if you maximize the browser in Gnome then you must be careful to press "Close" button in top-right corner, because there is the top panel.

KDE instead actually uses just one panel with a Kmenu button, but it's very confused and overdone. There are too much things together and it's not useful.

A possible solution? look at the pictures:

- Picture 1: We can see just one panel and a KDE menú button so we have all the space of the panel for open apps. But.. ¿just one buttom? ¿the same as now? let me continue.
- Picture 2: When mouse is over menu button (or click into it) the menu is expanded and three buttons appear: "Apps", "Places" and "System". And over the menu another button appears: "Exit", which let the user a easy way to terminate the sessión or switch off the computer. The expand action could be smoothly.
- Picture 3: When mouse is over a button an horizontal menu appears: big icons and good accessibility.

3)

More things:

- In the top of the desktop we can see "Actions" and "Contacts". Pressing in "Actions" could show a menu with the typical actions ("Create a document...", "New email", etc). "Contacts" could show a menu with Kontact contacts grouped by "friends", "family" and more. Each contact could show a submenu with "Mail to...", "Chat with...", "VoIP with...".
How to do those buttons in the desktop? I don't know, but I think it could be easy with Plasma, maybe?

- In picture 3 we can see an option called "Recents". It could show recent documents and recent URLs.

Note: This idea is based in the following picture:

I like the "Search for application" text box.

 vertical

Hye,
I do like your idea but once again it's all horizontal minded.
I always put the kicker bar left and/or right, depending on the pc I'm at. Because all screens are getting wide anyway it's better since you otherwise loose a lot of space at the bottom or top, and since almost al computer related tasks (surfing, typing, mails...) are going from top to bottom it's easier to have space there.

The thing is, it's possible to have those three buttons on the same bar as the taskbar if you put it vertical.
I hope you get my idea, for the rest: I love your idea :D

In your case you set the kicker vertically. What's the problem when pressing the menu if the 3 buttons appear horizontally? why not? of course the 3 buttons will appear on top of all the windows, so you can easily press them.

Anyway, the designer could implement a vertical way for the buttons if the user set the kicker vertically. I see no problem.

but not for me... I dont like to move my mouse from one screen side to the other, it aggravates my carpal tunnel syndrome ;)

however someone newer to linux or to computers or maybe with accessibility issues, might find this very handy

But i think, apps should be in their present state. Places, contacts, etc as you suggested. IMHO =)

 Search is good

I would quite like to see the search idea for applications. As it is now, the majority of the time I press Alt+F2 to get the Run Dialog and I type in the name of the application. I do this because I find it a lot easier and quicker than navigating the kmenu.

The only times I really use the kmenu is if I need to run an application that I don't use very often and can't remember the exact command for. Also for commands/applications that have weird hypenated names, but even if it's a weird command name that I still use often, I end up creating an Icon on the desktop. Because having a two step process of just clicking the Show Desktop Icon, then double clicking on the icon on the desktop is a lot easier than the kmenu.

Also the kmenu is always full and cluttered, especially with KDE apps (that I don't use) that are installed alongside other apps that I do use, because they are dependencies or are packaged in the same stupid package.

I also agree that lining up the icons on the desktop horizontally would be an improvement for atleast the people who read/speak languages that are written horizontally, like English.
I find it easier (being a person who reads/speaks English) to read a couple of rows of horizontally aligned icons than I do vertical rows of icons. However, I would probably find this the opposite if I was someone who read/spoke a language such as Chinese

Did you know that the KMenu is customizable?
Did you know that you can launch applications from the "Run Command" dialog by writing their KMenu name?
