Description:

The idea here is to hide the application in favour of the document itself. First of all, it is a manner to work using the concepts of real life such as paper, photo, video, ... and mail, writing, drawing, etc. The work place is really increased as all the interface buttons disappear.

The idea is not to loose the user in a mess of keyboard shortcuts or tricks that would more look like easter eggs, but to encourage the use of them. Mouse movements, buttons and place would play a central role, encouraging the use of mouse scroll, middle or both button use (for example to move documents).

Contextual menu could then be more furnished (e.g. in the gimp) as it would become the more intuitive manner of accessing functionalities of the underlying application.

Application tools could be raised in the foreground when hovering some places in the document or by activating some key/shortcut/button, but this would always be in an intelligent restricted way. I mean that it is not useful to raise all the application window, select a tool and hide it again, but more bringing to foreground the necessary tool only and masking it when done. The application interface would then be a lot more split, it's true, but this would act a lot more like 'document property' or 'document actions'.

This is an idea ;)

why go to the top of the document to get the menu? Why does the menu look traditional.

Perhaps have the menu appear where the mouse is

When a document is in focus, could the menu / toolbar / toolboxes all hover just off to the side discretely?

Could the toolbars/menus be eliminated and the only boxes floating (discretely) around are informational (ie - the status of the tools you are using / the page you are on).

Those boxes would be largely transparent/subtle and move out of the way automatically.

Any buttons/menus to change tools would pop up right where you are

[not sure if this was in your text... didn't read just looked at pictures which need to speak for themselves]
