Common context menus for common objects

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 58%

Submitted:  Jul 4 2006

Description:

Look at applications you use. Almost everywhere you got list of files (in Amarok playlist, in aMule you got Transfers, in Firefox Downloaded Files).

Why each file-object in different apps has a different menu? Because the app has some specific work to do with a file (play/download/edit/insert etc).

But still a file is just a file. We would like to open it in some other application, copy to somewhere convenient.

That\'s why I would like to have some common menus for common GUI-objects. I mean a context menu for a file (in whatever application) should have some common actions (depend on the MIME of the file) in addition to the menu position provided by the application.

That\'s not limited to the files (think of them separately for each MIME). The other common object is a date (in calendar). In any app it would be possible, to set (show or copy) some events of the day if only a calendar is viewed. No more need to check in separate program (KOrganizer probably).

I will provide some mock-up in some time, but I want to state, that the idea is not really only-KDE related. To have a fully usable desktop, the \"common menus\" should became a standard (f.e. FreeDesktop), to allow GTK application to use THE SAME actions for THE SAME object.

I don\'t have to prove that it would be really useful, do I? Just think you downloaded a graphic file with aMule. Now to start fun with it, you got to open Konqueror, navigate to the Incoming folder and open/edit a file. In my vision you would have such a menu right in aMule. Great, innit?

A permission to use the idea is only granted to the projects which are GPL, thus a realization of it would become GPL.

 mvc...

i have posted this a couple of times alread, but i haven't had any feedback.

perhaps this time...

MVC (Model, View, Controller)
applications have similar needs. open, close, quit, next, previous, save, ...be it a text file, a piece of code, a song, a picture, ... applications allow access to these actions through toolbars. and every app has its own. what if MVC was exploited and a "desktop" toolbar was made available?

on startup, apps would register as listeners and would register their behaviour. this "desktop" toolbar would then act on the active window/app.

this would save up a lot of space (and not only space) in each app and in the desktop as a whole.

possibly, other stuff may be implemented along the same lines... list of open files, bookmarks, search boxes, progress bars...

in my mind, this would be handy, 'cause the same action/feature/object would always be in the same place, would always look the same way, ...

of course apps should leave the freedom to choose between "inlined" features vs "nearlined".

what do you reckon?

cheers,
g.

Our ideas are very close to each other, but not the same. I would say, they together would make any desktop more usable, to the each and average user.

Your idea is, I would say, engineer dream. In your dream everything works in perfect cycle.

My idea is a basic improvement which may be a realization of your concept.

I'm sure we see future desktop in the same (or almost the same) way, because we believe the philosophy of desktop should be plain and easy to get.

The ideas are only steps to take, in order to realize such a philosophy.

(The problem is, however, that it's not really the KDE issue, it's the Linux desktop issue, but why not make the rules (in KDE4) and see other use that rules ;))

after some (re)thinking I must admit, that your idea is great. It's almost the same for the main application window and its toolbar like mine for the object and its context menu.

just need to see what kde folks think about it, then...
