Description:

In earlier versions of KDE, Tear-off menus did worked, but some day they dissappeared. I'd love to have them back in KDE4. If you think it might be confusing for beginner, make it a configurable feature.

See screenshot from GIMP, where tear-off menus do still work.

KDE had them, but indeed they disappeared, and as almost nobody complained, they stay gone. 99.9% of KDE's users don't seem to care about them. I think if you can ensure it's some global option for KDE 4 to turn them on (and you or someone else really need to get involved quick then and work on the current global KDE menu-code) it might come back, but I wouldn't count on the current KDE developers to do it.

You are so damn right! Thanks for posting here, though I'd like to recommend posting a bug report for this.

For the previous poster:
You can turn them on in KDE control center, but only those tear-offs appear which have been "implemented" If doing so, the only tear-off which is left is the one in Konsole's optiosn menu.

The reason for this is, that Qt does not support tear-offs for menus where QCustomMenuItems have been used. Therefore, the developer must tell the menu if it shall have tear-offs or not. (I do not know if KDE has its own menu classes, maybe then nobody uses them).


For me, this is a very annoying fact. KDE has been in earlier times a real "UNIX-like desktop" with UNIX-look'n'feel, supporting tear-offs, mouse clipboard, window focus switching by mouse move... Though I admit it is quite okay to make this optional to emulate a Windows/Mac Look'n'feel, it seems that with most developers coming from Windows/Mac, they are not known to them anymore...

I don't know why that one was chosen since I believe the next one is more clearly:

It seems that the tear-offs-are-gone-feature introduced to KDE in version 3.1 seems to annoy quite some people, it got 381 votes (at the moment)

Probably your should mention the link in your text to get some kdelook voters.
