VLC Extension

Description:

About

Version: 0.94
Repo: https://github.com/calculon102/vlc-batchfiledelete

Enables batch-processing a playlist while deciding to skip or physically delete the current playing item. In any case, the next item will be played after decision is made.

Installation

Copy the only lua file to the lua-extension folder of your VLC-installation and restart the media player. See https://www.vlchelp.com/install-vlc-media-player-addon/ for further details.

As of now (August 2016) these locations are for the current user of your OS

In Windows: %APPDATA%\vlc\lua\extensions\

In Mac OS X: /Users/%your_name%/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/lua/extensions/

In Linux: ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/

For Windows only - Experimental!

Copy delfile.exe to %APPDATA%\vlc\lua\extensions\

This file implements the deletion of files for Windows-filesystems as the Lua scripting-engine does not support this non POSIX-machines.

Important note: The deletion behaviour on Windows is a also bit different this way. Instead of immediate deletion when pressing the according button, the deletion is reserved for the next user-action within the extension-dialog (delete, skip, close). This is to prevent VLC from freezing, when a current input-file is deleted on Windows. In addition you will see a short pop-up of a command-window as result of the external file-execution.

Motivation

I was surprised that after so many years of VLC and VLC-extensions there was no real option or extension to reliably delete files directly from VLC (or any other media player). Yes, there are some platform-dependent alternatives, but these are not made for batch-processing large playlists with previewing via playing.

Current state

This extension just works for me on my linux-machine and is in beta-state. It probably needs additional testing for different OS and playlist situations. Please do not hesistate to write a comment or mail describing a concrete error message or situation.

Windows-support is experimental. Because the OS-functions of Lua only support POSIX-filesystems the deletion on windows is implemented by the companion-executable 'delfile.exe'. As described under installation, the deletion does not happen immediately as under POSIX-compatible systems.

Changelog

[0.94]
- Fixed Windows-deletion with only one playlist-item left.
- Added Windows-specific note to dialog.
- Fixed deactivation-call.

[0.93]
- First Windows-implementation without freezes on Win8.1. Deletion happens asynchronous on next action instead within the event-handler for input-changes.

[0.92]
- Experimental Windows-support with companion-executable 'delfile.exe'.

[0.91]
- Changed from lazy to direct deletion of files if possible to prevent VLC-freezes.

[0.90]
- Working implementation for POSIX-machine.

Dialog disappears after 2nd attempted delete

I agree, Calculon, VLC needs a delete file feature. I tested yours and the dialog box disappears after the 2nd attempted delete and all the files remain intact. I'm on Windows7. Thanks and good luck!

Hi Diplotek,

thanks for your testing on Windows! I'm running a linux-machine myself and therefore I missed two imported points.

First, the file-path was not created in valid way. That is fixed now.

But the second issue is, the Lua-scripting-API of VLC I use, does only support POSIX-file-systems for removing files. That means practically, no windows out of the box.

Maybe it works, if I let execute a "del"-command on Windows instead. I try that in the current version, but it did not succeed on my Win8.1-VM. But maybe you have more luck on Windows 7? That would be a step in the right direction.

Regards

Hi DIPLOTEK,

do you like to try again with the current version 0.93?

Thanks!

 Doesn't delete the file itself

On Win7 it deletes the file from the playlist but not from the folder. It also crashes VLC if you close BatchFileDelete before stopping the player.
Thanks for trying again because this would be a VERY useful feature!

Thank you for testing! I'm sorry, it works on my Win8.1-VM with a random playlist of MP3 and VLC with my home-folder.

What is your VLC-version? I'm developing on 2.2.2 (linux) and 2.2.4 (windows).

I assume the lua-script and the exe-file are in your %APPDATA%-folder-structure, correct?

Are your files outside of your home-folder, maybe on a differnt harddisk? Are the errors or warnings in the "Messages"-View, when deleting?

Mh, another Win7-specific-option could be to rely on the "Subsystem for UNIX-based applications (SUA / Interix)" (see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=2391&751be11f-ede8-5a0c-058c-2ee190a24fa6=True)

That would be a harsh requirement for a VLC-extension and it's not supported anymore for Win8 and above. So a predictable dead end. And AFAIK I can't detect the Windows-version on Lua-level...

Hi Diplo,

I fixed the behaviour when there is only one playlist-item. But in this case it's important, that the extension-dialog itself is closed before closing VLC, because of the asynchronous deletion.

Still, I could not reproduce the crashing on close while playing you describe. I'll look into it.

Hi,

as stated above, the script does not work on Windows at the moment. I'm experimenting with alternatives to the Lua "os-remove"-function, which is the culprit here.

Funny as it get's I managed to call random exe-files from VLC-Lua on Windows (like "calc.exe"), but delete commands are ignored...

I think I'll try to compile my own "delete.exe" for windows, which I'll call from the script. Maybe that works.

I'm happy for any other ideas. The lua-script to download here is open-source. :)

On W10 only os.remove(path) method works fine with VLC. My guess is there are some issues with privileges when executing delfile.exe from VLC.

I think after retval = os.execute(command) value of retval will be always true, since IO errors seem to be only printed and command window terminates successfully.
