3D Virtual Office

KDE4 Brainstorm

Score 44%
Downloads:  239
Submitted:  May 28 2008

Description:

simple virtual reality office. not \\\"desk top\\\". actual \\\"office\\\". with a desk,

it can be block-based and incredibly simple to start with (with people contributing artwork and \\\"alternative office layouts\\\" akin to those of second life being way way into the future)

each \\\"concept\\\" (e.g. wall clock, calendar) which has been mapped onto \\\"desk top\\\" due to historical 2D legacy reasons can be placed properly where it belongs: in a simple 3D rendition.

the implementation is easier than might first appear: it\\\'s no longer \\\"virtual reality of science fiction\\\".

KDE 4 supports composite. ODE (Open Dynamics Engine) is a full physics 3D simulation library used in many professional 3D games. a 600mhz ultra-low-voltage Pentium M with the older style 815 intel extreme 3d graphics is perfectly capable of running compiz-fusion, with the cpu running at only 450mhz with the default compiz settings.

it\\\'s perfectly doable.

Hey and who say it has to look like microsoft bob? Microsoft can't do anything right anyway......but just look at this video, if that's what the poster is talking about, then I agree with him and I wish I could have such desktop in kde4 instead of those stupid plasmoids as my desktop icons (I really don't get this idea).

Anyway, here's the video:

I disagree with you. I think that Microsoft Bob was unsuccessful because, in Wikipedia's words, it was "too cute" for normal users.

And also, probably the technology was not ready for this kind of idea to be developed. I've seen screenshots. Its horrible.

But I think that an interface that combines this and other ideas (such as the BumpTop idea--wow!) would be really successful.

Striving to make the desktop appear like the physical world is wrong in my opinion. It is a bit like saying everything that comes from nature is more healthy than synthetic products.

We can let us inspire from the real world, but we should continue trying to make our own logical intuitive systems. The world wasn't made for human beings. We just live here.

The problem with looking like something to much (like a real desk) is that it confuses the users. When we watch a scifi movie we often say "see that, totally unrealistic!" but in cartoons we just accept things. Because it creates it's own universe.

We can make things much smarter than a real desk. otherwise, perhaps we should just use mechanical tools for our document handling :-)
